Default Do aftermarket head units have to stick out from dash?

I have an adapter mount that makes the head unit stick out from the dash more than I like. I don't see why the radio can't be more flush into the dash. All the adapters I have seen seem to do this. Are they all like this?

no. there is a metra flush mount kit. sorry, i forget the part name, do a search for flush mount or something and you'll find it.

only thing is you will have to remove the brace that supports the stock radio. that will give you some more depth. but make sure your deck isnt too long, i have a alpine 7998 and if it was any longer i would have had to use the kit that sticks the head unit out.

I was at Best Buy yesterday and they showed me a Metra mount that quite flat, maybe I was looking at the right one, I will have to check. Thanks.

Does a 2001 need the antenna cable adapter? (You can tell I have not pulled the radio out yet).

yeah you will need the antena adapter. my 01 needed it when I put my Pioneer HU in last week. I used the recessed mount kit like above at first but it looked too flat against the 01 dash trim panel for my Liking so I ended up using an old kit and mounted it with the standard flat mount.

The plate I made back at school using a wire edm and the actual mounting piece (behind the aluminum) is a custom cut 1/8" carbon fiber layup

Thanks guys, I wish I could sell it...me and some buddies looked into it, but the licensing from GM is tough to get and big money. I would make them individually if I had the machinery access but I dont...so this is a one off bad boy.
