So who's got a writeup for this one?

Looks AWESOME. Also, the guy did a great job mounting a mac mini in his car. I'm fully impressed.

Well, I'm preparing a write-up on the PAC SWI-X infared controls, but after seeing this.... damn.

I think i'll be on this; im going to buy a radar detector when my tax return gets here, so I'll try my best to make a step-by-step for this process. Seems like almost everything has been done before on this forum, but since I just joined the Fbod club, I gotta make a name for myself somehow... lol. Going to be a bit interesting...

Anyone else tried this before I dive into it?

Should be extra tough on our cars, since we have our dome lights integrated into the mirror.

A friend of mine did it in a Fbody with a Valentine radar detector. Exacto knife and acid etching if I recall.

You need to disassemble the whole radar detector and extend the wires for the display stuff. Not hard but time consuming.

Your not cutting through the glass your cutting through the reflective back of the mirror. You then use acid to clean off the residue.

step 1: cant use cobra detectors, theres no wires to the LCD its soldered directly to the board! lol
Whats a good detector? I guess its time to upgrade!

Shouldnt be hard depending on how the display is connected to the circuit (in the detector). I have a Cobra that hasnt been used in a while, maybe ill open it up and see how that all works. To get it to show through the mirror, just scrape of the reflective coating on the back of the mirror, dont know how youd do it that good though and not chip the rest of it off.

Edit: Wow, didnt read the post above me lol. Ill still open it up. But yeah if its connected with a wire, just extend it and mount the sensor part somewhere else, adn with the 12v wired to ignition, you wont have to worry about turning it on. You can even move the speaker to somewhere.

A company actually makes these for porshes and bmws. I am working with them to make one for my z06 and V1. Opening your radar detector and extending the wires will void your warranty and if your not a good solder then I wouldnt even try it. With the V1, you just plug in the extender cable and you dont even have to open the radar.

i emailed the guy and this was his response:

On applicable vehicles, I charge $350 in a situation where you send the
mirror and I do the work then send it back. This installation will only
work with a Passport SR7 or SRX, however. Please let me know what kind
of car you have and if you were planning on using the 8500 for this or
were going to switch to one of the above-mentioned systems. Thanks so
much for your interest, and please let me know.

if i were to do this i would want to upgrade the mirror to one with digital compass and temp. readouts. but those are $250 plus the $350, is $600! and the radars he mentioned are integrated into the hood of your car...$1500!

i'm gonna have to give this a shot myself, with my 8500

Hey guys for anyone interested, I just purchased one of the new x50s and Im going to be doing this, I have a bunch of extra mirrors here I purchased a while back for another project so if it goes smoothly I would start doing it for others, I will post up on my webpage.. Most likely I will just buy the radar detector and mirror and sell them as a set with easy instructions!!
