Default Passport 8500 Hardwire

Is it possible to run the hardwire for an 8500 straight to a 12v source using just telephone wire ?

I really wouldnt be happy to buy the hardwire kit only for them to send me a phone cable with one end chopped off for 10 bucks.

Anyone else done this ?

I went with the kit, but it looks like the phone cable would work
FWIW The kit includes a remote mute button and alert lights

I wouldnt do it.
Most telephone wire is single strand.
Why pay 300+ for a radar just to go cheap on wire?

My V1 came with a modular phone jack end on the cig lighter
plug and a piece of phone-looking wire as well for the remote
display. I used another piece I had laying around, to hardwire
it into the rear view mirror power feed. It's not ideal, the power
gets bounced by the BCM on events like keyless entry operation
yet stays on generally. But it was the only handy, hot source
that didn't want paneling pulled off, so....

You can get modular ends and use fatter wire. But the telephone
wire I used (one of those freebie segments that came with some
phone or other, I always keep wire) is stranded albeit not very
heavy gauge. No issues with the V1 current draw or performance
with that. If you wanted I bet you could find a double-ended one
at Wal-Mart, Radio Shack or wherever. You'll want to beep out
the lighter adaptor, and find which two of the four are your hot
and ground as-plugged-in. This will be different depending on
which end you choose to discard from the phone wire.

I ran a phone cord with a phone cord coupler off the standard cigaret lighter power supply that came with the 8500X50 passport, simply cause the twisty cord looks too gaudy strung up all over the dash.
works like a charm.
no problems and easy too conceal.
home depot. $6.00. no problem.

I really could care less about the piece with the flashing lights and mute button on it, I really want the hardwire to get the coiled cord out of the way and I'd really like to have it hooked up to a non-constant 12v source. The only thing I was worried about is that maybe those goofy control things regulate the voltage or something so it doesnt get toasted with a voltage spike.

Which wires should be positive and negative ? and anybody have ideas where I should wire it in for non constant 12v other than the power antenna, that is a bit of a stretch

I did, found a very thin phone cable and ran it to the fuse panel. No problem in two years.

Ok I will use one of those power light things to check the pink just to make sure. I am also going to attempt to wire in my own LED and mute button and probably a kill switch too, so I should have some pictures for you guys to look at Friday evening.

go to best buy and buy a wireing kit that is what I did cut into my 12v that goes to my fog lights and the ground to my stereo. just make sure you do not cut into a 12v constant!

i used a regular telephone wire to hardwire my V1 detector, dont know if you could buy the piece they sell or not, all i had to do was splice into a wire under the dash

I ended up using a regular phone wire (2 pair not 1 not that it matters if you are only doing power...) and soldering a lower gauge wire onto the end of it to make for easier tapping into the TCS power wire. It works great!. Next week I am going to play with the other two wires to try to see if I can figure out how to put an LED on my A Pillar so I can blast my music and still notice radar alerts. I will also probably be putting a small kill switch in the center console so I can cut it off if I get pulled over. Once I get all of that done I will post a detailed write up.
