Tom - I sent you the email on the alternators. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

The standard alternator is 105 amps. The 98 - 02 cop car package has the same 105 amp alternator.

I installed the large alternator and it barely fit. The upgraded alternator is the size of a Suburban alternator.

Hope this helps.

The upgraded smaller sized alternator gets too hot which in turn significantly reduces the alternator life (been through a couple of these small sized upgraded units)

yeah,
for now, i don't even know if hi-ouput alt is going to help me.

The problem is that i'm running ASP crank pulley and stock overdrive/alt pulley

so, even if i'll get a better alt it won't give me much, right? i guess - right...

Speaking of...do any of you guys have your headlights dim noticebly for a second as soon as you hit the brake pedal at night? I'm wondering if this is a common thing w/GM altenators causing this? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

Actually, my lights dim for many reasons. For some reason, my alt. volts like to drop to 11 or 12 for a sec and jump back to 14 to 15 <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" /> Ya got me why?

Expect to pay big bucks though. You didn't say what you needed it for but since this is the stereo section, I'll guess THAT.

Haven't priced any in a looong time but I'd guess in the $600 range for a 180-200 amp model. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

Okay, saw what you wanted it for and just remembered the other brand...had a brain fart. <img border="0" alt="[jester]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_jest.gif" /> Also, the light/brake thing is pretty normal I think, at least between mine and your cars. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

OHIO GENERATOR

Don't know that they have a web site but you might find some info here...

I've dealt w/alternatorparts.com and I encourage you to do your homework before parting w/your hard-earned $$.

Keep in mind that unless you have some custom fabrication skills, you're probably gonna need to stick w/your stock-case CS130-D (Gen 4 F-body). A bigger alternator w/bigger case won't bolt up. The 200-amp CS144 is nice and big, and fits easily in a Gen 3 F-bod, but not in a Gen 4.

Remember that when you're spinning a bigger alternator, it takes more engine power to run it. If you changed your pulley to make more engine power available, you're defeating the pulley's purpose by going to a bigger alternator.

The output for the B4C (police) alternator is the same as the one for the Z28/SS (105Amp).

Perhaps the biggest lesson I learned is that the big amp alternators need their rpms to make power. At idle, my big amp unit won't charge at all and the voltage drop trips the idiot light. I learned from other sources that this is "normal". If the vendor (alternatorparts) had mentioned that, I'd have stayed stock - since I discovered that tidbit of info, they haven't returned my calls/e-mails.

Just my .02 <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" />
