Damn - was hoping this was going to be progress pics..

I really don't see the need for such an elaborate setup if you're just going for SQ. Clearly, you want SPL too, right? With all that space, why not go ported? With the amount of power and SPL you are going for, a ported system would probably be better as far as sound quality as well.

Nope, no progress on my setup. Hopefully some one else will do a big system and post up or at least some plans for one. I'm a long ways off from even getting started. This last box I think would have to be installed from under the car. Just lift the car and slide the box under and then lower the car down over it and bolt it in. Good luck stealing it .

HEY JasonWW, you have a creative mind. Keep it up! Your giving me some good ideas!
I 've been doing a little research on putting a box in the rear seat area too, I don't use the rear seats at all.

I don't use my rear seats either, but it's a catch 22. There's plenty of space for a big box in the rear seat area, but you lose about 5 dB of output in these cars. SQ drops a little, but it's not as bad as a properly setup ported enclosure. Most folks probably wouldn't hear a difference in SQ. I would probably settle for it myself, but the drop in output is just so big. It would be like swapping a 750w amp for a 250w one. Or you could look at it like this, moving the sub to the rear will make your 250w amp sound like a 750w one. It's free power, basically. That's why I want a box that uses the rear seat area, but has the sound come from the far rear.

I think your pic is in a new Mustang? In those, I think the rear seat area is the preferred location for a big box. I remember the audio shop I go to did 3 15's in a ported box in a new style stang. Hatchbacks are just different sound wise.

Doesn't bother me. If you want to compare peak output you'd need a much more expensive device like they use at the competitions. It's not worth getting for 99.99% of folks.

I have a '98 Bird with just a tiny Kicker Amp and one '12 Sony Xplod 1200 Watt Sub in a box in the back where the T-Top holders are... I also have an EQ on top of the head unit with some 3' Tweeters in the door.

When I turn my radio up everybody on the block can hear it and feel the sub, I'm assuming it's because of the Dome-Shaped hatch... It amplifies the sound that much more.

All that for less than $250 and my system is way louder than systems going for 3x as much.

EDIT: Time for me to do the same thing in my SS now haha

Welcome to the forum, but what does that have to do with a big backseat system?
I'm guessing you didn't read this thread?

Here's a couple more ideas. I can have a small storage space at the rear:

Or not:

The new floor over the twin tanks should look pretty much like this:

I still need to look into someone building them locally from sheet metal and then sealing the metal. I know there are places that can seal them up to prevent corrosion.

If I gave up the rear storage I could mount both a box and a new fuel cell in the rear compartment. Using a pre-made fuel cell will probably be a lot cheaper for me in the Long run anyway. I'd really be helping the weight distribution as well. I could then run two air tanks in the rear seat area. I wonder why I didn't try this arrangement sooner?

Because the whole point of your thread was to have a system where the back seat is, and save that area for storage.... so you didn't see it as an option before

Ehhh, your probably right. Still, how many possible combinations are there? I can't believe I came up with so many.

That gas tank is about 22 gallons. 5 more than stock. That's cool.

No. Ever since I decided to replace the rear suspension, the stereo stuff got put on the back burner.

First I do the suspension, then the gas tank, then the sub box.

It's definitely going to be sealed. I never liked even the best ported boxes. Output shouldn't be a problem with 3 JBL 12" GTi's and 2200 watts continous power.

I actually have had a new concept floating around in my head. With the independent rear suspension the diff will be at a fixed height which will lower the floor height. So....

I call this the Panel Truck idea.

Lots of possibilities here. Numerous box sizes and shapes car be used. Just slide it in and out the hatch. I could also have a custom mattress made for, well, use your imagination.

I could put mufflers in the back section or put the gas tank in the back and mufflers up front. Lots of choices.

Wink

IMO, I think a big problem people have with ported boxes is tuning the port/s too high, making the port/s to small, and making the box too big. All of which can lead to crappy bass!

I'm not talking about premade ported boxes at Mobile One here. I've heard some good ported systems built by pro's in class winning Iasca and Usaci vehicles. They can sound good, but I still prefer the SQ and extension you get with a sealed box. Add to that the smaller volume needed and the simplicity in designing the box and it just makes more sense to me.

Me likey the subsonics as well.
