Lightbulb Push button start

Hey guys, been doin some lookin around and I see a lot of people like to use the push button start from an S2000, thats pretty trick but I don't want to buy that part, and would like it a bit more stealthy. I have the steering wheel controls on my TA, and would like to wire it to the mute button. Is this possible? I know it needs to deliver a constant 12v when pushed, is the mute capable of delivering that? Any links or help would be great, even if not pertaining to my particular setup.

Heh, or I guess if you wanted to get technical you could wire the start to the "Play" button, and then make the "Mute" button a kill switch lol. I'm sure it can be done the way I want, I just need someone with a bit more electrical experience to pipe up.

Here is a great link for the S2000 method. http://www.pitreweb.com/s2000sw.htm
It covers everything you need to know, but I'm more concerned with using the mute button. I'm sure its possible, anyone have a schematic so I know which wire goes to what?

you would have to wire up a circuit to work with the mute button as the wiring harness isnt just a straight shot to the radio. I know some one on this site has the more technical answer.

How difficult would that be? I really am a n00b when it comes to wiring, but I think I could figure it out if someone had the specifics.

I'm going to just think out loud here for a second. The mute button is an on/off switch. A start button would have to be a momentary contact, only on while you're pushin' on it.
Maybe you can change the type of switch under that button, don't know. Maybe some kind of relay would work.

Mute button isn't on/off...

Go to the last song on your CD, mute it and wait for the CD to go to the beginning... it automatically takes the Mute off. Same goes with turning the car off/on. If you turned it off with it muted it will come back on when you start it back up.

Sorry guys...you're just spinning your wheels here. The steering wheel controls have a single wire for power input and a single wire for signal output to the radio. Each momentary switch in th esteering wheel has a different resistor connected to it and the radio reads the value, does some arithmetric, and determines which combination of switches was pressed.

So, unless you want to build your own logic circuit, you can't use the steering wheel switches for on/off or momentary circuits like you can with ordinary switches.

I agree with WhiteBird, The steering wheel control give out a signal and not a dry on/off contact. The only way this could be done, it would be to take appart the switch, take everything of the circuit board, and pass new wires. Then these new wires would activate a relay because those switches are not strong enough for anything. It would be a good idea, but if I would do it, I would go with a seperate switch. Too much is destroyed in the car to make it worth it.

Ah damn, oh well. That sounds like a bit too much work for me. Was a good idea though. Now just need to think of some other trick place to mount the switch. How about the rear defroster button? Wait, that wouldnt work because it is similar to the TCS switch. Any idea for any other places?

You can get the factory trim plate that holds two switches - the TCS switch and the convertible top switch. Then use a convertible top switch to start the car. It is a momentary switch so it would work well for the starter.

Trim plate - convertible top switch with TCS: 10260611
Trim plate - convertible top switch w/o TCS: 10260610
Convertible top switch: 10402722
Switch connector pigtail: 15306189

Unfortunately, the pigtail is the most expensive piece so you might want to just make your own or cut one out of a wreck at the junk yard.

Ok, so it looks like I would need the trim plate with TCS, the convertible top switch, and possibly the pig tail. How hard is it to fab my own pig tail? The convertible top switch is 20 bucks, and the pigtail is 27, the trim plate was not found on the site I used. Hmmm, that ol' S2000 switch is looking better and better, but I would really like something more original. Keep the ideas coming fellas! Thanks for all the help so far everybody!

EDIT* Wow Whitebird, what part of J'ville you in? I was born there, and all my family is down there. As a matter of fact I am in Jacksonville right now at my grand mothers house. We are over by Orange Park, off of Cassat if you know where that is. I actually just bought my TA here this week from another member on this board. Small world!

I know I would like to do something like that. But I would like to keep all the buttons hidden.

I haev been wanting to do something like this for some time, but just never have time for anything....One day I hope though......Thanks for that link to wire that sumbitch in.....only question that I have about that is:

Does it by-pass the clutch safety mechanism? Does that make sense? You know what you have to push the clutch in to actually start the car.

Just wondering.

I live in Mandarin and work off of JTB. I'm always amazed by how many f-bodies there are in the south and relatively few in the northeast. During my last trip to Buffalo to visit the "outlaws" I don't think I saw one all week.

I haven't looked at the site but I doubt a clutch bypass is included. You have to realize that this is not a remote starter - it's just a switch designed to be used when the driver is in the car. You would still have to press the clutch. In fact, you would still have to put the key in the ignition for the VATS system. You could bypass that but then anybody who sat in your car could start it without a key. Somehow I don't think your insurance company would like that too much.
