Did this last weekend on my TA using this thread and the instructions to splice into the CD changer cable. Works great and saved a ton of money.

First Jason thanks for the write up and answering all these questions.
I would like to do this for my 3rd Gen using a cassette HU.
I circled the place I think I need to cut, #1 (Blue) and #3 (Red) and then follow all the other instructions, just wanted to make sure if you have time to look.

Here is what the front of the radio looks like

If you give me the go ahead next stop is radio shack.
I currently have put in an after market HU to get the MP3 jack but it does not look near as good as a stock HU and I am keeping the car as stock appearing as I can.

Thanks, -Jeff

I actually did mod a 4th gen pontiac tape deck, it appears to be the same as yours, audio was on the smaller cable though:

If there is any doubt you can test it by cutting off the end of an old set of headphones and connecting the ground and the left or right to paper clips and probing the pings while it's playing, that's how I discovered them

Holly Crap, I even remember reading that part, I think it was over load.
Thank you very much, and man that was fast I went to send a link of this to a friend who I think would be interested in doing it and when I came back to get the link there was an answer already, wow, it 12:24 where I am, I need to go to bed now, alarm goes off at 5:20.

If I have a changer which wires would I tap into? Or would it be easier to just tap the cd player.

If you have a changer you can tap into the changer's cable so you don't need to open the the head unit. You'd use the same concept and jack listed here, but I don't know the specific wiring, I know there's another thread on it.

Thanks to Jason Novak for figuring out this shyt!

Just did it on mine and I'm so damn happy!!! Mine had only one long connector ('98 without CD changer) and I used the one furthest to the back of the unit and the 3rd from it. I just need to figure out where to mount the connector, I have it looped up in my glove box for now till I can figure something out.

I can't find the thread anywhere. All I am bringing back is some adapter. Nothing as detailed as you posted. I might just do your way.

Check another one done, works awesome!
I did this on my third gen, I prefer the look of a stock radio in the firebirds, especially at night.
Thanks again Jason.

If you mean the jack you can get it from radio shack part 274-246, it looks like they've dropped the price to $2.49

I think for recharging you're probably best off using a USB cigarette adapter.

i agree.. i was thinking that some kinda dock that had both would be really cool, but on the iphone (which is what i'll be using this for 99.9% of the time) the aux out is on top, and the charge port is on the bottom..
