Default So Im getting around to upgrading..

Ive been reading a lot of the stereo threads lately cause I finally want to have something better than stock. I only tend to spend up to 400 on everything though, I probably wont get to go over that even later.

I plan on getting the 1 stealth sub box from subthump - 100ish
Either JLs or Alpine? for the front sides - 100ish
Im not sure which 10' sub I should get though, I havent really seen many choices for those just yet.
I was hoping that all of that will be able to work through the monsoon amp, would that be possible? Unless someone can sell me a decent one for cheap.

I listen to mainly Trance, DJs, and Metal.
I also am a newb when it comes to installation, I hope I will be able to figure it out through guides on here.

If you don't plan on powering this with something other than the monsoon amp you should just save your money and not do it.

There's no way a Monsoon is gonna push a 10" sub. Plus if your gonna get a quality sub like a JL or Alpine why would you skimp on the amp. Keep in mind you will also need an amp kit of some sort to wire up everything. $400.00 is about how much it cost for a sub set up by itself.

Plus amp kit...$35.00-$40.00. This is a good amp kit with quality RCA's. Plus an amp to push the sub...$100.00-$150.00. So your up to $400.00 already just to put a sub in. Amp kits have power wire, ground wire, remote turn on wire, fuse block, RCA's, and ususally some kind of wire ties.

If you do it yourself!! LOL!! You can't just put a sub in a box and power it off the radio. You have to have an amp to push it.

Yeah for $400 you're going to have to get cheaper equipment or find some REALLY good deals on used equipment.

Going used is risky, but you can find some really good stuff if you're patient and willing to hustle a bit. I just purchased and will soon install the following.

(2) Ecipse 8122.4 12" Subs: $50 on Clist
Audiobahn A8001D: $130 on Clist
ProBox dual 12" fbody sub enclosure: $90 shipped from tech's classified section
4 gage install kit and and PAC Trunk Loc (Line level converter and Low Voltage Trigger): $70 from Sonic Electronix

Total cost: $340

Happy hunting!

Replacing the speakers but leaving the stock head unit won't improve the sound. On a really limited budget you need to first replace the head unit. Then, as long as the factory speakers aren't blown, you can add a sub, box, and amp either with a LOC or using a pre-amp output from the new HU. That is already going to blow your $400 budget.

Another option would be to replace the HU and upgrade the sail panels subs with better ones from eD or CDT. It won't give you the hard hitting bass of a bigger sub/box/amp combination but it will fit in your budget and improve the sound while being easy to install.

And all of that is just for subs! The OP wants speakers AND a sub...

Doh! Right you are. In that case, I agree it's a tall order, even if the OP goes used across the board. If he settled for a solo 10" in a Stealth enclosure with a cheap mono amp, he might get down to $250, but $150 isn't a lot for new components.

What's more, replacing the speakers while keeping the stock HU would be pointless, as WhiteBird notes. The factory speakers aren't exactly HQ, but they're not terrible either. There's a fairly strong consensus that the weakest link in the monsoon system is the stock pre-amp and low-power Delco amp from the head unit. Mine distorts at less than 6 o clock even with a flat EQ

You can do it piece by piece.
A head unit, highs amp, and decent component set up front with stong midbass (like the phoenix gold RSd6.5 set) will be a great place to start. That can be done for around $400. Then you can add a sub later.
