2002 Camaro B4C Special Service Package

Straight from the era of high speed chasers, this 2002 Camaro B4C Special Service Package car still looks brand new after a hard life.

There was a time – many years ago – when police forces around the country were equipping themselves with high-speed chase cars, vehicles that in some cases are as plain clothes as the ones we drive. This included models like the Chevy Camaro, arming police with something they could use in special circumstances – i.e., to chase down bad guys with fast cars themselves. Times have changed since that golden era, and these days, many police departments don’t engage in high speed chases because, well, they’re dangerous, instead leaving those duties to helicopters. However, this 2002 Chevy Camaro B4C Special Service Package equipped car up for grabs at Bring a Trailer is now aiming to give someone a chance to relive those glory days.

This 2002 Chevy Camaro B4C Special Service Package certainly isn’t something that you see very much anymore, as these cars have essentially gone the way of the dinosaur after living pretty hard lives while out on duty. This particular example served most of its life in the sunny south, and still bears a Florida Highway Patrol livery on the outside. Since then, it has moved around a bit, but remains in pretty stellar condition for a car with 109k miles on the clock.

The exterior has been refinished, which certainly helps it look like new, and while it isn’t an unmarked car by any means, it’s still a bit stealthy. Outside of the graphics, one will find the typical police fare such as a strobing light bar, four rear-mounted antennas, and some official markings, but otherwise, not a whole lot to separate it from its civilian counterpart.

The same goes for the interior, which is pretty much par for the course with a fourth-gen Camaro, save for the added equipment that includes a Federal Signal SmartSiren, a Kustom Golden Eagle Ka-band speed measuring device, a loudspeaker, and a police radio. Take a peek in the cargo area, and you’ll find a fire extinguisher and control boxes the radio, strobe lights, and SmartSiren.

Pop the hood, and you’ll find GM’s venerable 5.7-liter LS1 V8, which was originally rated to produce 310 horsepower and 340 pound-feet of torque, which flows to the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission and a 3.23:1 Torsen limited-slip differential. The B4C Special Service Package also added a host of upgrades including a high-output alternator, separate coolers for the engine, power steering, and transmission, larger front and rear sway bars, and beefier four-wheel anti-lock ventilated disc brakes. Complete with a bunch of cool stuff like historical photos, service records, and even police uniforms, this Camaro police car is certainly a unique find, and one that we imagine will strike a chord with anyone who remembers seeing one of these things decades ago – oftentimes, unfortunately, in their rear-view mirror.
