A 2004 Pontiac GTO with stock LS1 hits the dyno for a power test after more than 111,000 miles.
This week’s Dyno Blast video features a 2004 Pontiac GTO with the original LS1 engine making a couple of runs on the rollers. Unlike most of the vehicles that we showcase on Dyno Wednesday, this GTO doesn’t make huge power. In fact, the car is stock with the exception of a muffler delete, but when you consider the fact that this car has 111,500 miles on the engine and the fact that this run is made at roughly a mile above sea level – the numbers are pretty solid.
For those who aren’t sure, the 2004 Pontiac GTO’s LS1 was advertised as delivering 350 horsepower and 365lb-ft of torque at the transmission, which with a 20% drivetrain loss ratio would lead to right around 280 horsepower and 292lb-ft of torque. Mind you, those numbers are for a new engine at average elevation, but this car has more than 111,000 miles and the run is being made a mile above sea level.
Even with the high elevation and the high mileage, this 2004 Pontiac GTO sounded great on the dyno and it laid down impressive numbers of 274 horsepower and 289lb-ft of torque at the rear wheels. Compared to the stock advertised numbers, this LS1 GTO is only losing about 22% of the power between the engine and the wheels, and while these numbers are impressive when compared to the modified LS1 cars which we feature – these are good numbers for a car that is basically stock with 111k miles being run at 5200+ feet of elevation.
Finally, with the muffler delete, the LS1 in this GTO is allowed to really clear its throat during the run, so crank up your speakers and enjoy!
"Before I was old enough to walk, my dad was taking me to various types of racing events, from local drag racing to the Daytona 500," says Patrick Rall, a lifetime automotive expert, diehard Dodge fan, and respected auto journalist for over 10 years.
