1969 Pontiac GTO The Judge

Iconic GTO Judge comes packed with a 400 cubic inch V8, full restoration, and a 4-speed manual with a Hurst shifter.

In 1969 Pontiac brought us ‘The Judge,’ a low cost stripped out version of the GTO intended to compete with Plymouth Road Runner. It features a 400 cubic inch V8, a 4-Speed Manual transmission, Rally II wheels, a Hurst shifter, and a slew of decals right from the factory.  While it wasn’t as appreciated then as it is now, it’s always been a sight to behold. Only 6,833 ‘Judges’ were sold in 1969, so they are a hot commodity these days.

How hot? Well, Motorious has this Carousel Red example listed at a cool $75,950. It may seem a bit steep to some, but when you consider the limited numbers and the meticulous restoration at hand, the price starts to make a bit more sense.

The Ram Air 400 cubic inch V8 puts out a healthy 366 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque. Also unique to ‘The Judge‘ is the rear spoiler, which Pontiac themselves admit doesn’t do much at legal speeds. Whether the downforce is useful does not affect how cool it looks, though.

The now-iconic name was borrowed from a comedy routine called “Here Come de Judge,” and Pontiac produced some pretty stellar advertisements for it. With slogans like “all rise for the judge,” the ads command attention and are sure to point out every unique feature. One even featured 60s rock band Paul Revere & The Raiders singing an upbeat tune about the car. You know a vehicle is exceptional when it gets its own song!

As the years go by, finding an example of ‘The Judge’ in this condition is only going to get more complicated. Prices are only going to increase, so now is an excellent time for an investment if you’ve got the capital. On top of the potential earnings, you get to spend as much time as you own it knowing precisely that. You own it. You could wake up everyday knowing you own a legendary piece of American muscle car history. Isn’t that alone worth the purchase price?
