Man Loses C8 Corvette In Worst Trade In Deal, Ever

C8 Corvette Trade In Mitsubishi Outlander

Would you willingly give up a 2020 Corvette for an SUV? Yeah, we didn’t think so.

2020 is just the gift that keeps on giving. We recently came across a post on Facebook that left everyone collectively scratching their heads. A gent in Texas named Tommy recently traded in his 2020 C8 Corvette for a Mitsubishi Outlander. Again: He chose to ditch a Corvette 3LT in favor of a Mitsubishi Outlander. Yes you read that right.

Now, we’re going to preface this by saying we are in no way car snobs. But we are enthusiasts. And when it comes to performance, it is hard to top the revolutionary mid-engine C8 Corvette in the range-topping 3LT trim. Especially with an Outlander.

The story first unfolded online when Dallas-based Hurst Autoplex posted a Rapid Blue Corvette for sale.

Sweet deal, right? How exactly did they get such a hot and hard-to-get car? Hurst posted that “Tommy from Fort Worth traded in his 2020 C8 for a brand new Mitsubishi Outlander!”

After people picked up their jaws and did a little math, the obvious question was naturally: WHAT DID YOU DO, TOMMY?!

But Hurst assured everyone on Facebook that Tommy was very happy with the trade.

Erm, we’re not sure that is the face of joy.

We are not blaming Tommy (much); and as many commented online this may have come down to a salesperson with ninja level skills of persuasion. Or perhaps Tommy found the Corvette didn’t suit his lifestyle, or maybe he needed a more affordable ride. Hey, life happens, we get that. However, we’re certain our man Tommy definitely could have gotten a better deal.

A 2020 Corvette 3LT likely came to about $74K, and was subsequently sold by Hurst for just under $97K. Conversely, a 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander SUV goes for about $25K. Someone got one fat commission, there.

But performance-wise, there is a wee bit of a difference. With a 6.2L LT2 V8, the C8 Corvette is one of the most capable and thrilling sports cars to come from the U.S. in years. It has broken sales records, and nabbed awards left and right. Sleek but muscular, it has 495 hp, 470 lb-ft of torque, top speeds of 194 mph, and can sprint 0 to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds without breaking a sweat.

And then there’s the 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander.

With engine options ranging from a 2.4-liter I-4 to a 3.0-liter V6, it produces 166 to 224 HP. It’s a family-friendly compact SUV, nothing too dazzling or interesting. Although it does have a few distinguishing figures. For example, it boasts subpar handling, a disappointing interior, and pretty dismal reliability rating. It also is noted for being one of the slowest-selling cars in the United States.

To the surprise of literally no one, the Corvette was sold in about two hours to new owner Ryan. Who, we’re guessing, was indeed very happy. While he paid about $20K over what Tommy paid (dealer markups, always fun), we doubt he’ll ever shrug and say “meh” about driving that sweet ass ‘Vette.

Ultimately the real winner here is Hurst Autoplex, who got a lot of free publicity, and have since removed the original post. Although Tommy still looms large on their Facebook page!

Oh, Tommy. We feel for you. Also, we need to know WHY; and were magic beans involved?
