Pontiac Trans Am Emerges From Time Machine, Hits Auction Block: Track Time Tuesday
What might be the lowest-mile 1979 Pontiac Trans Am in existence is also an amazingly well-preserved time capsule.
These days, it seems as if low-mile vintage cars grow on trees, as they just keep popping out of the woodwork on a regular basis. While we oftentimes question the validity of some of those low-mile claims, in other cases, it’s pretty obvious that we’re looking at a true time capsule, vehicles that look like they’ve quite literally just rolled off the assembly line, decades after they were actually built. It’s unclear why some folks had the foresight to preserve these vehicles for so long, but that’s precisely why we’re getting the chance to buy this – what is essentially a brand new 1979 Pontiac Trans Am at the upcoming 2023 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction.
While this isn’t the first low-mile example of a second-gen Firebird that we’ve come across in recent memory, it might just be the one with the absolute lowest number on its odometer – just 37 miles, which is truly bonkers when you think about it. Who, in their right mind, would buy something this cool, only to stash it away and never drive it for decades? Unfortunately, we don’t have the answers to that question, but the car certainly speaks for itself.
This 1979 Pontiac Trans Am is a true time capsule of a find, and it still has the original window sticker and mileage statement tacked onto the passenger-side window, along with the dealer inventory tags. The auction house claims that it still smells new inside, which we don’t doubt given the stellar condition of the car’s cabin, which is finished in Carmine Red.
The same goes for the Starlight Black exterior, which is in amazing condition. The Trans Am still rolls on its original 15-inch snowflake wheels, which are wrapped with the original tires that it was sold new with at at Caldwell-Knap Pontiac in Jackson, Michigan decades ago. Well equipped with air conditioning, power steering and brakes, cruise control, power locks, a limited-slip rear axle, and the optional hood decal, this vintage Trans Am is powered by GM’s 403 cubic-inch V8, which is mated to an automatic transmission.
Obviously, cars like this don’t exactly grow on trees, and as such, we imagine that it will have its fair share of suitors when it hits the auction block. The real question is – how much is someone willing to pay for what might be the lowest-mile 1979 Pontiac Trans Am in existence?
