How Quickly Can a Crew Cab Go? Try 8 Seconds in the 1/4-Mile.

This four-digit-horsepower ‘Heavy Chevy’ hustles the streets of Florida.

It’s hard to imagine any crew-cab pickup smashing sub-10-second passes down the drag strip. However, this monstrous crew cab Chevy represents wonderful excess in all forms, especially speed.

YouTuber That Racing Channel scoped out the specs on this bonkers Florida-based crew cab, long-bed 2001 Silverado that has run mid-8s. If you’re wondering about power levels for a massive truck like that, the owner Jeremy tells TRC that it makes about 1,250 horsepower to the wheels.

2001 Chevy Silverado Turbo LSX

The healthy horsepower dose comes from an NVR Racing-built 430 cubic-inch LSX engine. You can pick worse shops to prepare an engine; Tom Nickerson earned Engine Builder of the Year honors in 2014 from Engine Builder Magazine.

Naturally, the LSX doesn’t make 1,250 wheel horsepower with natural breathing. A 98-millimeter Garrett turbo shoves in about 25 pounds of boost with the screws twisted to full kill. Holley Dominator EFI provides engine management. A Turbo 400 transmission and Ford 9-inch rear axle get that massive power to the rear wheels.

The big old Silverado lacks subtlety entirely, which works perfectly for a 5,000-pound truck that runs 8s. The exhaust dumps out the passenger-side fender and it’s hard to miss the glorious turbo noises. While the truck’s length means a heavy ride, it also keeps the Silverado straight down the track, like a long-wheelbase dragster wearing a heavy jacket.

Interestingly, the truck has only ever had one owner. Jeremy bought the truck new in 2001. He “daily drove it for awhile, raced it, and broke it.” We know that tale all too well.

The truck lacks a roll cage, which has kept it out of competition. Instead, it makes for an incredibly berserk-yet-utilitarian street vehicle. We don’t know what the maximum vehicle capacity is on 1,250 horsepower, but we’ll bet it exceeds what the frame can handle.
