Default Anyone know how to restore lens on headlights??

I 've been wanting to do the Whistler mod but would like to restore the lens on my headlights first due to some fogging on the top of the lens. If anyone can help me out I would greatly appreciate it.

There are a couple of ways to do it both are kits that you can get at an auto parts store, one is by mothers or meguires and the other is by the same people that do rtv silicone. The one made by loctite or permatex (RTV) has several different grits of sandpaper and a polish. you gradually go to the lightest sandpaper and then to the polish. IT WORKED LIKE GARBAGE. I heard the other made by Meguires is good, but I think you need a high speed drill for the buffer. I also heard that Walmart of all places actually does it for 45 dollars a piece.

I saw the meguires kit on tv and it appeared to work well but I've never tried it. I've also heard you can buff them out with a soft cloth and some toothpaste.

Don't use any sandpaper. The toothpaste suggestion works in place of polish.
You need a vibrating sander like a mouse or similar. Put a felt pad on it, that can be bought @ a hardware store. Use a polish or a scratch remover (toothpaste as a cheap alternative) & run the sander w/ felt pad installed back & forth DO NOT GO IN CIRCLES, just back & forth. It may take several applications. Good-luck.

Crystal View headlight restoration kit, at your local auto store. I did it on my headlights and they came out clear.

I disagree. You just won't get far enogh with the polish/scratch remover to get all the tiny cracks out.

I found someone who specialises in this and paid him $50 to do both. Had them off, cleared, and back on in 45 mins.

Headlight cleaning: Sanding vs. Polish Remover

From personal experience with the mx6, if they are pretty bad it would take 8 hours of polishing to get sanding results. Sanding makes them look brand new, since all the yellow is outside due to sunlight. After trying to polish i did wetsand and they looked much better. But if you keep up regularly then polishing is enough.

So, I guess that when I did mine without sandpaper, it didn't work??? The method described in my post works flawlessly & without scratching.

Do you have pics? Yes it will look "good", but like stated above, if you want the headlight to look new, wetsanding is the way to go. Or you can polish and polish and polish for a few hours.

Your lights could also not have been bad either. But if there's any tiny cracks, or bad yellow/fading, wet-sanding is the ticket.

Btw, all I said was that I disagree, and then why. It was pretty uncalled for to included the sarcastic eye roll.

The sander does all of the work; no need for wet sanding. I've done the sand paper method as well. The electric sander w/ felt or soft nylon pad & polish works best.

Oh, almost forgot

Still would like pics, just for comparison. I'm curious if I'm wasting time. I've tried just polish before, just like you've tried sanding. Never got the "new" look with just polishing, but have with sanding.

To be honest I'd buy some new ones...

I have tried everything! I paid a pro, did it myself, used sand paper, didn't use sand paper and no matter what I did they never look as good as a new set.

Even buddies who are GOOD at doing it and whose headlights look GREAT when they are buy themselves are BLOWN OUT OF THE WATER by the new set on my car.

I spent $225 shipped on ebay for a BRAND NEW set of GM headlights... I spent TWICE that over the years polishing and buying used ones to polish. Just my personal opinion...

Here is a pic that I took today. Don't have before & after pics. Never really thought it would be discussed. This is what it looks like after.
