Hang in there, its worth it in the end. I have about a year into this one as well but it's almost done. The fuse blocks were a pain in the a** to get mounted upside down under the fender. We ground the welds down as far as we could then just hit everything with a light coat of body filler and had very little to finish sand. With all that work though it would really pay to have someone come in and shoot it with a gun and not a rattle can, we cleared and colorsanded the whole thing afterwords. Here's a few pics, it's a lot closer now I'll try to get some new ones.

That looks really good.

Its really not an option for me right now to pay to have it painted. Ill be tear the car back apart in a year, so itll have to till then.

Sorry to everyone im disappointing with that decision.

99Z51R, That looks freaking awesome, just more motivation to get out there and work on mine....
Whats was the point to cut out the center section where the radiator sits...was it to fit the bigger radiator or so you could mount the intercooler..

Lets see if someone can tell me what im doing wrong.

I tried to paint it last week.. and i was having problems back them

Im not really sure how to explain it, i was having little spots in random spots its cracking.

I decided it wasnt clean enough... So last night when i put a coat on, these are the steps i used..

sanded with 600, then decided to go with 220, for more bite.

Then i washed it with soapy water. wiped dry.

then i laid on a few heavy layers of paint. and then let it dry overnight.

I woke up this morning, and checked the paint. It looked great, aside from a few drips, and some speckled overspray. I wanted to clean it up and put on another layer. So i sanded down just like before, then washed like before.. same steps...

Then when i sprayed, it immediately was peeling or cracking.

At this point, i just want to get my interior in, i will not be re-doing this again. i dont care if i doesnt last a year, or if i dont get to clear coat it, i just want a relatively smooth paint job.

Ahahaha I see it. The ears look like tiny legs and make it appear as if the dog would be walking only on it's front legs...

I am looking towards doing something extremely similar with my 93 once it starts going back together.

If you think that not having your car for a year is a long time try 29 months. My car blew up in my driveway June 3rd of 2007.

After sanding I would have blown of the area with a air gun to get the heavy contaminent off. Then used prepsol or brake cleaner to clean the spot you were going to paint. It should yield 1 million times greater results then just soapy water. Are you not using a primer?

I am now, i think i might have sanded down through the original primer in some spots and so it was cracking off, so i decided to put down ~3 heavy layers of primer.

Now im trying to decide between

Smoke gray..

Flat clear over the primer... (If i can find it)

Custom color... (I just gotta figure out how to go about doing that)

Ill be getting my wheels powdercoated to match my cage, so i need to paint my cage a color id like to see on my wheels everyday....

I just went through and looked at all my old pics... Im thinking that after all this BS. I may go back to gloss black, I cant decide between Gloss black, flat black, or dark gray.

What do you guys think?

I was thinking itd be cool to match my cage to my wheels, which i want a dark gray...

Also, my interior will all be done in black leather and CF, so i think gloss black may blend in too much

I'd do something like a gunmetal, anthracite, cyber gray maybe.
