Can surbuf pads be used for compounding or are they best used for polishing?

Thank you for doing this thread. Your work never ceases to amaze me.

Quick question. Earlier in the thread you told someone to get a quality car cover and only cover it after washing. My car sits in under a car port 95% of the time now.

Do you have any recommendations on brands or what do you consider quality cover?

Ok so I got a question for ya.

Long story: The top of my drivers side fender is messed up, has been since I got the car. In bright sunlight the fender appears faded and dull. In the shade though it looks fine and the paint matches. I've also noticed the very top edge of my drivers door is starting to get this way as well. The affected area on the fender looks scratched like maybe someone tried to fix it but didn't know what they were doing.

Short version: What is this? and is it correctable?

Yes, but respect its power. I almost never use it above speed 4 and speed 3 is primarily what you'll need.

Surbuf pads are only for compounding, not for polishing at all.

A fitted nylon/elastic cover designed for your car that fits tight. Covering outdoors leaves the cover vulnerable to wind and any give to the cover itself will cause marring as wind moves it around against the paint.

Looks like a form of clearcoat failure to me. You'll need to get that resprayed if thats the case.

That's what I feared. No budget for paint right now, so I'll just keep looking for good fender off another pewter car.
-Thanks for the quick reply.

Oh wow, only speed 4 on the griots? And that's for most compounds or polishes or does it increase with more aggressive or less aggressive? Whoops...so what speed on the griots are using to apply waxes or sealant?

Thanks.

Yes, its a strong machine with good torque.

Speed 2 or 2.5 for applying sealants/waxes.

I wouldn't bother with the pad kit. Just get the Lake Country 6pack pad kit, maybe two.... I'd get 4 of each (orange, white, black).

Sounds good, thankyou.

No luck on the price match..

Jeff,

What pads/products would you use on single stage paint? I'm going to do a full detail on a 74 Monte Carlo here soon. I've only corrected clear coat so far.

I'm using a PC 7424. I have LC yellow, orange, white, black pads. I have M105/M205 compunds. I just ordered the Meguairs MF system but haven't received it yet.

Thanks!

Each car is different....so experiment and see what works. SS paint is generally softer and easier to correct than base/clear paints. You will need to clean the pads frequently because they will load up with paint and product quickly. Least aggressive method first.

LC yellow is about as useful as a coaster. The MF system is great, but it loads up SUPER fast on SS (single stage, so nobody gets confused with Super Sport ) paints. The orange, white, and black are gonna be your best friends here. Megs 205 works great on SS, but you may have to finish down with something finer, like Menzerna 106FA or 85RD.

You can apply it by hand, but is it needed? No lol. I like to because its fun to do it that way, but you use 4-5 times the amount of product versus a foam applicator pad. Good for dramatic effect or fun, but there is no "benefit" to applying it that way.

I have used the yellow pad twice and wasn't impressed with it. I thought since the white and orange pad worked so well the yellow will really take some stuff off. Negative on that.

I picked up some 85RD also, glad to hear I can use it.

Looks like a type of rotary....looks way overkill. I've never seen one used for detailing...
