Default Trans am LED gauges

Okey so I have read a lot about the gauge overlays and LED lighting in the gauge cluster. However I feel that I'm more confused now than I was before haha.

I have a 1999 Trans am and want to have blue interior LED's.
I understand everything like the shift indicator,HVAC, headlight swtich yada yada..but and lost about the cluster itself...

.If I want blue light cluster( and dont feel like dealing with the red film on the back) do I have to buy an entire gauge cluster from a Camaro? Or just get Camaro overlays? Or what?

Someone please help because I think this would look great in my NBM TA and just need to understand what needs to be done.

Well the red is a film on the back of your cluster so if you want to keep your trans am cluster you'd have to get rid of that film, I've never done any of this I'm just going from write ups I have read bc I plan to do a red led cluster in my camaro, so if I get any of this wrong someone please correct me, overlays wouldn't help, best bet to go blue would be get a camaro gauge cluster and do some blue led lighting on it, the film on the camaro cluster has a whitish blue film on it so shouldn't be a problem, and as I said if I got any of this wrong please correct me

I believe since this is a digital odometer mileage is stored in the pcm, once again not 100% sure on this electronics aren't my specialty lol

I would think the LED Odometer would switch out from the camaro and trans am.
You can reference this thread... http://www.ledgauges.com/id26.html

and switch out these

I'm not 100% sure though.

Why would you switch the whole cluster? Why don't you just deal with the film, it's not that hard.

I don't have an issue dealing with the film, just from what I've read it hasn't proven great results...they all have faded spots and end up lighting not being spread evenly..

If you have links or can let me know what I need tto use to get the film off efficiently then please do share I wouldn't mind spending some time on it, just want a nice end result.... thanks

You're correct. It's stored in the PCM, not in the cluster.

So I could just plug in a different cluster and it will read my mileage?

That's weird, when a friend swapped his digital cluster, it showed the mileage previously stored on there. I had thought it was in the PCM until that point as well...

Yeah actually from alot of reading I've done its definitely not stored in the PCM, many people swap PCMs and retain their same odometer reading. It must be stored in the cluster...so therefor....does anyone know how to transfer the odometer reading from one to another??

Also: to my main point.....how do I deal with the red film on the cluster in a TA??!!!!

Just grab a Camaro console from a Jyard and switch them out. I think it would be easier than messing with that red film. Waiting for a firebird ot T/A person to chime in though.

Yep, you're right.. I was mistaken. I went and looked it up, and yes, accumulated mileage is stored in the cluster. So it you swap, the mileage will be wrong, and it's not likely you're going to find someone that will correct it for you.

You only have to maintain this from your old cluster and put it into the new cluster from a camaro. Right?

not sure where in the cluster its actually stored, i would think the odometer itself... by all technicalitys is a fellony offense for anyone but the dealer to tamper with it. Id recomend a custom set of overlays on your stocker. 6le/mcnord or theres others too.

I think as long as you register it at the dmv to show that the mileage on the odometer is not the actual mileage you would be fine, its no different than like when I replaced my motor, I had to do the same thing, my odometer still has original mileage of 135xxx but in all actuality the motor and trans only have about 20k on them, but unless you go to sell the car I think you'll be fine
