Default Water temp gauge

Hey guys - I have spent 2 hours running searches for this info and cannot find anything. I bought an Autometer electric water temp gauge. The instructions that came with it are a joke. Where should the gauge get its signal? I know where to tap power and ground - just need to know where the gauge is supposed to get its info!

Passenger side head underneath the number 8 spark plug is a block coolant plug and you can take out and put the autometer sender in. You will need an adapter as the Autometer will not screw right in. They can be VERY hard to find. Got mine from Autobarn.com. The fitting is by Equus and the part # is: EQU6848

Bryan is correct. Also make sure that you thread the gage sending unit into the adapter first - then thread the sensor/adapter combo into the block.

The adapter has VERY thin wall thickness due to the sizes it is converting. If you put the adapter in the block first - then thread in the sensor - the sensor will tighten in the adapter then start to turn the adapter tighter than it needs to be into the block (due to the NPT) - where upon it will snap off!

I was very careful when I did mine but did it in the wrong order and it did snap off - luckily there was enough sticking out that I could get a hold on it to turn it out of the head - otherwise I would have been screwed.

Or if your lazy, unbolt the starter, and you will see a plug in the block. Remove it using an 8mm allen head. You will need an M16x1.5 x 1/8 NPT for your sending unit. It's easier to get to than the head, just as accurate.

Sorry to bring a old thread back alive but was getting ready to hook up the water temp guage an was wanting to get a steel adapter. What size is the adapter exactly for the fitting to go into the head. I will have the heads out so it wont be that hard to get it in.

Is it possible to just splice the new gauge wires into the existing factory wires?

In a word, NOOOOO!!! I tried this and it totally fucked things up. It tells the computer that it is 40 below and dumps fuel like crazy. I also tried using the "98" sonsor and harness cause they are 3 prong but the temp gauge still doesn't work. Going to use the hole on the passenger side head this time.

Tap it into the top of the H2O pump. Very accurate and no adapters that can strip in the head. Done it on 2 LS1's now. Works great

BTW, pic's worth a 1000 words......so here you go.

Is that adapter going into the top of the water pump the same size as you would use in the passenger head?

I'm also curious where people think the best place to run the wires from under the steering column to the engine bay is.

I bought a brass T-fitting and basically did the TB bypass with it....killed two birds with one stone. I threaded the sending unit into the t-fitting and ran all the wires from there. The lid covers the fitting, and I wrapped all the wires in factory wire covers so you can't tell it's there. Works great and temps are spot-on. Very simple and quick install there too.
