Default Texas Tint Law...Need Help

Anybody know of any shops that do the Texas vehicle inspection that can help me out? My front windows are tinted at 20%, which is the limit to pass the inspection. However, the tint meter reads 19% and they won't pass my car. This seems pretty stupid to not pass a car for 1%, but whatever. Anyway, my car was tinted outside the state of Texas, so I do not have the compliance sticker to verify this and i can see no way around it other than having to remove the tint and then have it put back on, which I really don't want to do. I live in the DFW area. Would appreciate some help. Thanks.

This sounds a bit ridiculus. If the limit is 20% and you come up at 19% you are UNDER the legal limit so I'd just go somewhere else and explain your siutation and you will find a shop that is willing to follow the letter of the law and pass your car. This guy is just being a dick. This would have been my reaction...."the law says 20% or under" "Ah, yea, I have 19% so I'm under ya jackass!"

Someone else will do it, 1% off is just rediculous. Now if you had 5% tint instead of 20%, then that is a different story, but that is not the case. I agree with Mike02Z, that guy is just being a jerk.

the lower the number, the darker the tint so yes he does have illegal tint on but come on 1% from legal is not that much to fail on inspection...hey be lucky at least you can put 20% on .here in mass its 30% no lower

Wow, I thought 20% tint meant that any darker than 20% tinted would be illegal. My bad, sorry. I still think the guy is being a jerk for 1% although he is within the letter of the law apparently.

the % measured is amount of light allowed to pass through, not how much is blocked, so 20% is darker than 35%.

the factory windows have a tint to them and meter 98-99 % so any film you put on there will come up a bit darker than the film IE 15% will read 13-14% or so.....just find a different place

BTW 25% is the law in TX.
RedWS601 you're correct, MA is 35% .

25% is the limit in Tx. a few % more is usually ok, but 19% won't fly at most places. try going in with your windows down and pull the fuse?

Default Thanks

Thanks for the replies..problem is, i could just go somewhere else, but every place I go will charge the $40 inspection fee. But now that I know what they are looking for, I can tell them to just check the windows right away and if the fail, nobody has lost any time or money, since the test takes a mere seconds. Thought about keeping the windows down, but they roll them up b/c that is what they are suppose to check. Maybe I just won't register my car in the state and Texas won't get their money...those SOB's!!

I swear the lightning has 5 percent and I always pass. Just go into the inspection with your windows down. Seems to work for me, guess they appreciate it b/c it is so damn hot outside.
