What's a quicklube place? Like a Jiffy Lube or something? Would they do a good job? And would they be cheaper than a tranny shop i'm assuming?

Just say NO! to the quicklube. Don't even let them check your tire pressure. They can't even tighten drain plugs properly, how the hell can they service a transmission?

Go to a trans shop or a reputable private garage.

Bring your own fluid, or they will use crap fluid (even the dealer will use crap fluid)

Tell them NO!!!!!! flush soloutions. Just straight ATF.

Depending on your mileage you may want to change the filter too, usually another $60.

So I should bring my own type-F fluid? Isn't all type-f the same, so how could they use crap fluid, or is there a certain brand that's better that I should get and bring to them? Thanks for the info!

The Valvoline place I went to for "emergency" removal
of the Trick Shift fluid used a pump machine, about 17
quarts of Dex pumped into the system using one of
the tranny cooler lines and the B&M juice scavenged
out the other side of the disconnect.

A lot of the quickie places may not even stock Type F
since it hasn't been used on a production vehicle since
the early - mid '80s and people with beaters aren't the
Quickie-Lube core clientele.

Some places will charge you the same price as if you
used their fluid, if you bring your own. Just because
they think they can, I guess, as well as you tying up
the bay for half an hour.

Trans fluid in general isn't the same. Trans fluid is like motor oil, some are better than others. Fluid designations like Dextron III or Type-F simply means it meets the manufacturers minimum requirements for detergents, friction modifiers, anti foaming agents, etc. The designation name has little to do with the quality of the base stock or other additives. There's a big difference between Wolfe's Head (El Cheapo brand) and Valvoline, just like their respective motor oils.

As far as how much they will charge, most of the expense is in the labor. They buy oil in bulk for less than $1 a quart. A typical flush of 12-14 quarts costs them about that much in materials. The other $85 covers an hour labor.
