Default What ATF you running?

So, while I have my car blown apart for the LT's and Y-pipe, I figured I'd throw in a new trans filter, pan gasket, and atf.

Should I just grab the stock stuff from GM? Or is there something else you'd suggest? What about the cheap stuff from wally world? The car is just a summer time daily driver, not a track car.

Also, the car has 156k on it. I doubt its the original trans, or it's at least been rebuilt sometime in its life.

Thanks!

just run the std dexron 3... castrol makes a nice fluid... ive ran the wally super-tech with no issues. Your not making 100's more hp... so no need for tractor fluid.

Dex6 it is. Im not flushing the entire system. I've read the pan holds around 5qts or so, so I'll start from there and work my way up if I need to.

Thanks guys!

I do not recommend mixing synthetic with star trans fluid.

Castrol this time.

In the past I've always used a cheaper brand from Parts Plus and never had any issues. Topped it off with some Oreilley's brand before and that stuff seemed a lighter shade of pink and maybe even a little thinner. Might be fine but I stopped using it.

I run Mobil 1. Dex 6, the replacement for Dex 3, is a synthetic.

My Yank converter instructions specifically say not to use synthetic oil in the transmission.

They also say Dex 6 is ok. I did a complete fill of Mobil 1 during installation of my SS 3600 over 9 years ago, its still in there. Plus I have hundreds of wide open lock ups. I have no complaints,

Agreed. I use Dexron 6 in my various builds with a Yank SS3600 and all works perfectly.

However I only Dexron 6 because I don't mind paying a bit more and I use it with newly rebuilt transmissions.
I have no facts, but I agree with novaflash2002 about not mixing Dex 3 and Dex 6 unnecessarily.
I think the majority of members here are running Dex 3 with no problems and there is little evidence that Dex 6 is any better; just more expensive. Dex 6 might last 100,000+ miles, but most members are going to replace the trans fluid every few years (e.g. 25,000) anyway.

In short, unless you are rebuilding a trans and don't want to change fluid for 100,000+ miles, just use a quality Dex 3.
