Confirm there were two "seals" under the rotor - an o-ring and a flat plate.

To get the lower section of the trans out, there is a yellow snap ring around the input shaft. Once you get that out, the output shaft will most likely fall out the bottom.

I see what you’re talking about, but I can’t for the life of me pop it out of place.

I don't think you will find anything wrong with the pump when you are getting pressures like this.

Sometimes you can push the output shaft back into the case and get a little relief for the snap ring to spread easier. A good set of snap ring plyers can get it quite easily though.

I work this weekend, so I have snap right pliers on order. I have a pair that are really cheap and aren’t worth a dang. So hopefully I’ll be able to get that out with the new ones.

What you need here are actually called "Lock Ring Pliers".
On Amazon the "SPEEDWOX 8 Inches Lock Ring Pliers" are $15.

thank you for the info, Ill order those as well

I would also like to point out that there was no o ring before the pump on the main shaft. (EDIT: I believe the shaft I have doesnt have an o ring where I thought there would be one before its pre 98)

Pics of where you think an o-ring should be.

since you have a new plate I would use "torlon" check *****, sonnax makes them. this will prevent future damage to new separator plate. also, there a bunch of valve body mods you can do as well as drilling the separator plate for quicker/firmer shifts. while some people like to feel the shift, it also clamps the clutch packs more, more longevity, etc. let us know when you are at that stage.

I see what looks like an o-ring on the far-left end of your shaft in the picture. That should be there and should be replaced on each rebuild and perhaps each time the converter is removed.
That is the only o-ring on the input shaft.
Did you find an o-ring under the pump slide?

You do mean pump slide, right?

The input shaft you have there is a pre LS shaft and as mrvedit said the o-ring appears to be there. What year truck and engine is this transmission in?

with me taking this apart, what part have a direct impact as far as first gear apply and reverse apply? As this is where I see the main problem, Im wondering what to look at exactly. if its multiple parts, or one that impacts both things.

To answer your question
In 1st gear the forward clutch pack is applied and the low roller clutch is holding.
In reverse the reverse input clutches and low/reverse clutches are applied.

So between both of these the only direct connections to both are the pump and valve body? or does input shaft have anything to do with both?

I have a PDF printed of all the parts and fluid flows per gear. Does the pressure tap come directly from the pump or does it go through valve body before reaching the tap/gauge?

I am going to be making a tool at work for spring cages to check clutch pistons as well.

I know I'm asking a lot of questions, just trying to understand everything. I am a knowledge seeker and love learning new things.
