Default 4L60e sun gear shell and sprag failures???

well I was just wondering if anyone has heard about the 4L60e sun gear shell and sprag being weak components of this tranny. I had a couple of transmission shop techs tell me that I should get these replaced if I am going to put in a new stall converter. They said that w/ 79,000 miles I will need these replaced or these parts will go out soon after. Bear in mind they did not test drive my car at all and my tranny is currently fine. They also thought that a 3400 stall rate is too high w/ no other mods. From everything I've read in this forum it seems like these two guys are full of crap. Anybody ever heard that these parts are junk or that a 3400 stall w/ 2.1 str would be too high for a stock 98 Z28? Thanks.

if you plan on modding the car, say gears, youll be alright with that convertor. as far as the parts yes they are some of the weak links, but if your trans is shifting fine i say don't mess with it till it goes with either you'll know there's a problem.

THEY are going to install the converter so THEY are going to be the ones you bitch to when these parts break. True or not? Even if you do the converter install yourself they are giving you advice, which I'm assuming is free. If it was followed by 'and were having a sale on these items this week' then I might think it's BS.
The forward sprag holds in all gears except fourth, if you look at one you'd wonder how people run with as much power as they do with this part.

IMO, don't tear it down till it breaks.

3/4 clutches are more likely to go before you break the sprag or sunshell.

Blower truck I'm familiar with has bent the sprag
over, twice. Second time was on a supposed well
built 4L65, first was the stock 4L60. Also ate the
3-4.

I don't believe the sprag is a part that sees a lot
of wear, and whether it's 79000 miles seems not
that relevant. It's the applied torque and that
is motor and torque multiplication pushing forward
vs gear-reduced vehicle weight pushing back.
weight.

The sun gear shell on my car stripped out at around 60K miles. Had a upgraded shell and just about everything else upgraded. My mechanic also stated that the sun gear shell is a known weak point in the 4l60e transmissions.

His mechanic is correct.I own a transmission shop and I have seen 4L60Es with the sun shell busted at 38000 miles.I would let them replace it with a Beast shell and a Raybestos 3-4 Z pack clutch kit.I ran mine over a year with no problems.

I have to agree with these parts being weak. I've broken them before, even when my car was lightly modded.

The sun shell especially is known to break. But the old "If it ain't broke" rule applies. Guys with rebuilt trannies seem to break them as often (or even more) than guys with stock internals.

when getting a tranny repaired usally you pay for the labor fom what ive seen the parts are not all too expensive (reltive to the full cost) nless something big goes and even then no real big deal with all the cores laying arround so the lesson to be learned is drive it until it blows then rebuild it right so you it dont blow again....ive had shops pull the whole sprag bs thing to me and even tell me my tranny was blown come to find it works like new.. hell even a bit better than new with the tune and the stall
