You completely just contradicted yourself.
I didn't lose nearly as much mpg from changing gears from 3.23's to 4.10's as I did from my cam. And I see all kinds of highway and city driving.

chocotaco...if you're so enriched with common sense, i guess you'd know that a steeper gear in some cases (driver dependent) will BOOST in town mileage. when it's easier for the car to accelerate, less fuel is needed to achieve x speed. you'd also know that an engine with a load on it @ 2,500 is burning more fuel than an engine easily operating at 3,000 rpm. however, you've already absorbed this information from "users and common sense"....but i don't see experience in your crudentials. hmm...that's odd. you're a fountain of information - as long as it has previously been posted on ls1tech, go figure.

EXACTLY!!! I went from 3.08's to 3.42's in my daily driver truck and my fuel mileage improved 17%. My cruising rpm went up from 2100 to 2600. Lower rpm does not = less fuel burned.......better efficiency = less fuel burned. I'm gonna go look for some of that common sense we all seem to be missing........

yea, 3.08's are actually the best gear for f-bodies in MOST situations. 3.08's will yield better mileage than 2.73's in city driving and get similar mileage on the highway that simply won't be enough to offset the gains in city. i never contradicted myself in anything. gears may not be the absolute worst mod you can do. or maybe it can be. if you put a MS4 in with shitty made heads, super high compression and a bad tune, you'll be pulling much worse mpg than gears. or, you can get a moderate cam, a nice set of heads, shoot for a lower compression and have your car tuned very well. that could very well result in much fuel savings over gears. you all are reading into things WAY too much and reading what YOU want to believe and putting words i MY mouth.

Having an LS1, wanting it to be fast AND having good fuel mileage is like training a kid with Down's Syndrome to be a mechanical engineer-it's just not gonna happen.

if you have a 2.73 car, the upgrade that will give you the best net at the track and at the street is a 3.23 or higher rear gear. my friends (identity witheld) slow *** pewter peice of stock ***** ran a 14.1 @ slow with 2.73 rear gear. my stock 3.23 car of the same year ran a 13.2 @ 104. gears give you the best feel and gain, lids are cheap, thats why its second, LTs are third because they are somewhat more complicated, more expensive, and after you have had the car for a while, you can do them yourself. a stall is last becuase on a car you have to drive all the time #1 it will SLAUGHTER your intown milage, AND #2 all you will do on the street is spin unless you have sticky tires (translation, expensive not very long lasting tires). yeah, stalls are awesome, but when a 1500 stall will spin the tires on the street all you are doing is creating a nice smoke show for people.

why would you buy a catback just to replace it later? makie no sensie also, when people are doing wheels up runs in the 9s on mildy modified 10 bolts there is no reason to waste 1500 on a used rear end, expecialy when you are arguing about 600. i have a logic book i can send you if you would like

WHAT THE **** ARE YOU PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT? did you even READ the posts before you opened your mouths? his car is STALLED! gears will net him .1-.2 off his quarter IF HE CAN HOOK UP, which will be a helluva lot harder since 3.73's will make his car a bitch to launch. don't open your big mouths before you read his mods. you're gonna spend $500 on gears, sacrifice the strength of your rear and lose 3mpg to go a tenth faster? i said that's a waste, get headers instead. you think i'm wrong? fine, but **** away your own money.

and for your information, i bought the car because it has 350hp and gets 22mpg. i can afford it. if it would have gotten 15mpg i never would have bought it. 22mpg is good mileage. these cars CAN BE very economical compared to some cars out there, and gets better mpg than nearly every V8.

lol the funny part is the guy already has a stall in his car. these people are criticizing my posts and they don't even know the reason why i'm saying what i'm saying or the thread starter's mods. i'm all for getting gears in an M6 car. i'm against getting gears in an A4 car that has been stalled. the gains just aren't there once it's stalled. the stall bypasses the very RPM range the gears were intended to pull you through faster making the gears in the end practically useless.

Actually, there is quite a difference here. This is one of those things that does just take a little common sense. Think for a second. Let's put 3.73's in both an a4 car and an m6 car and say cruising speed is 70. Now in the a4, you're going to be turning about 2400 rpm's (assuming your converter is locked) and in an m6, you'll be closer to 1700 rpm's (assuming you're in 6th gear). Now that's a pretty big difference in my book.

Dear God this thread has been thoroughly hijacked and gotten out of control! There's over 150 replies (most of which are from Choco ) and only 1 is from the original poster!.........

redformulaws6: Yes, I think you would be better off with longtubes and y-pipe (although not slp, pacesetters are a better choice) than 3.73's at this point. Judging by your first post, you're concerned with making et improvements.....then I would suggest that the next thing(s) on your mod list after headers would be 3.73's and sticky tires.

Chocotaco:
1. This is your first "muscle" car, and first LS1
2. You haven't had it very long
3. You only have a lid, catback and wheels
4. You don't have a cam, heads, headers, a stall or 3:73 gears and it's very apparent by your posts you have little to no experience with any of these mods.
5. Nobody is saying your not trying to help out, but the reason people criticize your posts is because of how adamant you are about mods that you have limited experience with.....mmmmk?

Now everyone play nice, we're all friends here.....well, mostly.

Exactly, when you have limited experience you should be more open to what people WITH experience say....

I didn't put 4.10's in my car until after I had gotten a cam, intake, tb, headers, exhaust, and stall.... Just do all that at one time and be done with it!
