Default Local Shop to build Stall?

I stumbled accross a place here in OK City that said they could build me a stall converter to whatever stall I wanted and install it for less than $600. Yeah I know, ya get what you pay for. But lets assume the guy knows how to build a converter, what sort of key questions should I ask about HOW he will build the converter so that I feel more comfy about shelling out my hard earned green backs? Could I just take a copy of the specs manual from Precision Industries or Yank and ask the guy if these are the same components that he plans on using for my stall? Or would you recomend that I buy a name brand stall and just have him install it? Which I have found wouldnt really be that much more, maybe $100 or $150 more. Your thoughts?

Hitting the stall speed target is probably the
easiest part. At least "close enough". Now if
you want to specify a particular STR along
with it, the builder has to know what to mix-
n-match, stator / pump / turbine. Add a demand
for any particular level of efficiency, enjoy the
blank look. Ask for a lockup clutch you can
beat like a two dollar ***** and still respect
in the morning, at a 10" diameter, and that
should be interesting.

Fuddle cost me a little over $500 in the end,
for this degree of specificity and pretty much
hit it ("only" got 96% on the efficiency). And
the install was a whole 'nother $400 deal.
Figure a straight tranny shop, maybe $300
for R&R and a LS1 converter anywhere from
$350 on up, a SBC converter w/o lockup from
$150 or so in a performance grade, where
does this proposed piece of hardware put
you? Trust these guys for warranty?

Stick to name brands if you want a solid converter. Converters definitely fall under you get what you pay for rule.

Thanks guys for the opinions. I'm always trying to save a little money just like everyone else so I had to ask about the place. Looks like Yank or TCI will be my converter of choice and then taking it over to the same place who put my gears in and did a great job doing it. Thanks again!!

Default okc converters

you can goto dacco of detroit and get a really good deal from
them on a 10" 2800-3000 stall its under $300.00 and they
gauranteee it for 90 days they are in okc i think on reno.. I
doubt if rpm was goingto build that for yah in house anyways....
zaine has a 4000 fuddle stall on his car and he got on it a bit before
we stumbled around putting struts on his wifes car. His 4,000 fuddle
stall rocks and he can still drive it around like a normal ride.. i had a
tci 3500 and it came loose after 7 monthsof semi abusive driving.

im either going vigilante or fuddle

if you need a trans rebuilt im going to A SHIFT ABOVE the guy there

named andy knows his stuff! hes right off of council by the home

of the whopper. hopefully hell have mine built by the months end

I was going to post more but jimmy pretty much summed it all up. There is a lot more that goes into a converter than just a "stall speed".

Also, can they test it on a special dyno? Very few have that kind of equipment, and one of them is a sponsor here.

stay with Yank, vig, or even Fuddle (low price). Don't ever go with a local shop for a "custom" converter. Bad idea!
