Any F-Body with 4L80E?
Hi to all.I ask the same question to the Tci and they reply me :
would have to recommend the 4l80E tranny. This will work and hold up to all the power you want to put to it. Then you will need the TCOM computer to operate it. The # for the tranny is 271000 and through us it is 2550$ and the controller is 860$. Hope this helps and thanks .
I reply them a few questions but still waiting(To long reply times...but at least they send a answer )
Anybody haves any ideas on the sujeckt? Or will it work on my 98Z28 A4? I dont want to buy all the thinks and import here to find out ohh its not working.....
Thanks in advance
Btw:I never saw or hear a LS1 f-body with that set-up thats why....

Re: Any F-Body with 4L80E?
I was planning to do it. But ARE, MMS, and the shop who is doing my install (Norris Motosports)said it will take a little hammering to get it to fit. It is possible and once it's in works just fine. I was going to get mine from http://www.hughesperformance.com
They sell there's with the wiring harness, computer and everything you need to mate it with a stock LS1. However, it's better to keep your stock computer and send it to Ed Wright for programming, that's who they use. I think, if memory serves, it was $2500 with a core exchange. A TH-400 core. Check with them to make sure, it's been awhile.
I chose to give the FLP level IV a shot. If it blows, I'm getting the 4L80E.
Good luck.

Quickin:Wow!Thank you so much.I ve learned a lot of thinks
So the size of the 4L80E is the only draw back ?Its not a problem for me I can cut everythink under the car(if neccesary)but i bealive a little hamering and a custom dirveshaft solve the problem.
I ll send a e-mail to Hughes asap!
Thanks!

Re: Any F-Body with 4L80E?
you might want to call www.netgearhead.com and ask them to build you one to your specifications. They are building me a 4L80E that will hold over 1000 HP (HUGHES says 800-900 HP for thiers) ...they dyno test all thier trannys before shipping plus they come with a 12 month warranty

Re: Any F-Body with 4L80E?
and one more thing I forgot to mention....You dont "NEED" a TCOM computer to operate it. You can have the 4L80E made up to be manually shifted 1-2-D-OD shifting through the gears by moving the gear selector. That way the tranny will be in the gear you want until move the selector to upshift or downshift. The TCOM computer is only if you just want to leave it in OD and have it shift itself, just to let you know.

Re: Any F-Body with 4L80E?
Two cautions about the 4L80E
1) It weighs a ton - you will definitely pick up weight with the switch
2) It has substantially more parasitic power losses than other auto trannies available
It will be bulletproof, but it is going to slow you down over other choices.
There are other transmissions out there that can be built to take *big* torque without some of these side effects, but usually you have to fork out the $$ to do it.

Re: Any F-Body with 4L80E?
Does anyone have the exact weights on all of these different transmissions??
T-56?
TH350?
TH400?
4L60E?
4L80E?
PowerGlide?
Anyone...

I would personally like to know the T-56 and the TH400 weights...

mexSSican: thanks ! I ll send them asap
I am familiar with the manual valve bodys.I have a TH400 with a manual valve body+trans brake on my 69 Camaro BB.But anyway its a valubale information. So i only need Ed to tune my computer(After the trany+swap parts)
WeatherGuy: Yea i know the cons But after all i have to buy a great trany that holds on the top speeds.Btw: (Not 100/100 sure) but i am planing to build a twin turbo LS1 in this winter.(or a LS1 motorsports single turbo with a build bottom end stock cube or 6.0 liter cast block based Ls1)

Re: Any F-Body with 4L80E?
I was thinking about a 4L80E since it is strong and has overdrive but, it weighs alot, requires clearancing, and the overdrive is only like .9:1(hardly worth it)
The 4L60E can be built to hold up for a while behind 450+hp but, reliability is still an issue. Hard parts are finally being developed for this trans. which may put an end to the reliability concern in the future. The nice thing is it is a direct swap and is actually one of the cheaper routes as no other fab/fitting work is necessary.
The 200-R4 can be built very strong, is actually lighter than the 4L60E, and has the same overdrive. The only con I can see is $$$.
You could do a T-350/400 but, then you have to get a gear vendors overdrive which is big $$$.
Each setup has advantages/disadvantages. Makes it hard to decide.

That weight problem makes the 200 look aweful good, eh? When built properly, they too, are nearly indestructable. I sure liked mine.

I chose to go with the optional gearing (2.75 1st and 1.57 2nd) for the 4L80E that way its gear ratios are closer to the 4L60E that Im replacing

I would trade 15 HP for peace of mind knowing that my tranny will handle the power and not be worrying when the 4L60E is gonna take a dump on me.

4L80E is more stout than a 4L60E.
I hear that cores can be $2500.
I'm not sure on weight but if you were pushing like 1000-1400 HP I doubt you would care.
