Effects of driving around with too much tranny fluid?

If there's enough, it'll start coming out of the dipstick tube. I drove mine around like this for about 500 miles once. It didn't hurt at thing.

If the fluid level rises too high, the fluid contacts rotating parts. The rotating parts whips the fluid and creates little air bubbles in the fluid. The air bubbles do not quickly release from the fluid and thus stays entrained in the fluid. This air-entrained fluid gets into the tranny's lines/passages and no longer behaves like a proper hydraulic fluid should. It becomes compressible and can no longer transmit full pressure to the clutches. That causes the clutches to slip and burn. HTH

From my experiences with full size GM's & Ford's over the years: a couple qts will whip up the fluid and feel mushy like nuzee says, spit out the vent like the Colonel says. When the fluid settles down it'll be low enough to cause delayed engagement with slipping. If someone is not alert to what's going on they can burn up their trans under these conditions. There's probably about a 1qt + - forgiveness margin.
I always have such a hard time setting the proper fluid level when refilling a trans; oil on the inner part of the filler tube gives false readings on the level gauge, the fluid being aerate from the initial 6qt start-up / shut-down / check-add 2 /start-up ... What works for me is a cold run level check after an overnight set.

I haven't noticed any coming out of the tube, but according to the dipstick, it's way high?

About a 1/2 qt can raise the level aprox a 1/2" on the gauge.
I doubt you hurt anything but you should set the level where it needs to be.
Pulling some out from the filler tube would be the easiest.
