I forget, what's the stock first gear ratio? 3.06? Wouldn't this planet slow you down a little? Or is this for the higher horsepower guys to get better traction?

I can understand trying to minimize the difference, but IMO, making the first gear more sluggish to minimize the falloff will overall decrease your acceleration. Why not make second gear a little steeper if minimizing the falloff is your goal? IMO, the taller first gear is better suited as a traction mod for high horsepower cars, at least in my mind. Maybe I'm way out of touch, I don't know

It is for higher powered cars. When the ratio is brought closer together the car goes faster.Permits traction and puts less stress on internal rotating components.6 pinion steel billet planet carrier.

That can only be done by changing the rear planet. We are looking into it as well .

Have these gears sets been successful or not worth the xtra cost?

While I cannot personally claim any ET benefit at the track, it did help my traction problems both on the street and on the track. The closer ratio also feels more "normal" on the street.

The original 6-pinion close-ratio billet planets were very expensive at around $1300; I got a used one for around $800.
However, Sonnax now makes a close-ratio billet planet which typically sells for around $650.

So, while I like it, it is probably not worth the extra cost for anyone on a moderate budget.

Here is a picture of the original 6-pinion close ratio planet:
