Default The Much Talked About Mallett Solstice V8

http://www.autoblog.com/entry/1234000363066362/

There have been rumors that GM is actually considering doing a factory V8 Solstice however if they're true, we wont see it for at least a few years seeing as how the turbocharged GXP version hasn't even hit showrooms yet. Nice job by Mallett. This thing should be a beast. Two things come to mind however. I'm wondering how much the cars curb weight went up, and how much this swap may have potentially fucked up weight distribution. Other than that, this thing looks awesome.

I doubt the V8 will be a production item.

Seems like used solstices down the road bought for around 13 grand...would be a sweet car to mod with a V8 installation kit.

Swap in a new tranny differential and radiator as part of the kit and it might be a hell of a good daily driver!

The LS1 is only about 185lbs heavier (with flywheel) than the Ecotec. (roughly)

Plus they also managed to achieve a 50/50 weight distribution with a 200lb driver and a half tank of gas, so that means they pulled weight off the nose to compensate. The curb weight can't have increased much at all. It'll still be lighter than a C6 Z06. (which is why a factory V8 is unlikely, unfortunately)

Wink

I bet the price would fall way under a vette.

So IMO V8 Solstice > C6

I think this might just be my next new car. I'll wait to see the Camaro in January, but I've always liked the look of the Soltice and with an LS2 installed looking quite factory, well, this is the Trans Am replacement! I'm already thinking about the mods to the LS2!!

The package for the Mallett V8 conversion is $18,000. With a fully loaded Soltice at $25K, that's a $43,000 rocket that'll smoke a stock C6!!! Plus, the Jaw-Dropping factor would be killer. "You want to race me with your little Soltice?? OK!!" Sucker........

a V8 solstice could take the banchee name, (the 2 seater pontiac Delorean wanted to make but was too close to the corvette as far as performance, so we got "stuck" with the firebird)

It does not use the stock tranny or rear as far as I remember reading.

As for replacement for anyone's current T/A, the Solstice is about the size of a Miata (A few inches longer). That's about 3ft shorter than the T/A, though about the same width.

Essentially think of it as replacing your car with a Miata. V8 or no, the Miata is a rollerskate. Would you want a car that small?

And as for smoking the C6. Depends. It'll be severely limited in the footprint area. It might out stop it and beat it in transitions (slalom), but the C6 will smoke it "on the big end". The Cd for the Miata is .37, as far as I could find. The C5 is .29. 'Verts suck for top end. So taking it road racing or to road courses would really show some weaknesses.

I am with you on that one if the new camaro is not living up to its name I may want one of these. My wife did say something about a vette in the future though.

Yeah, I'd like a C6, too. However, it's too price prohibative. Even though it "starts" at $44K, to get a new C6, Z51, DVD nav, loaded, you're at $56K. That's just pushing too much. Used is a possibility, but there haven't been any under $40K yet. 2004 Commemorative Z06 is another option, but they too are right at $40K used.

The Mallett car would be exclusive, fun, and fast. Sounds good to me! But, I'll wait still for the new Camaro. I hope they don't **** it up!!!

In response to the tranny and rear end questions. This thing uses the SSRs 6 speed manual and a CTS-V rear diff. God I hope it's the V specific '06 diff as the '04 and '05 diffs IIRC were standard CTS units which were the cause of so many rear end failures.
