So my oil pump went out and the motor sounds nasty it does idle smooth but loud like a metal to metal sound. anyway should i just rebuild the stock ls6 or should i stroke it or even yet just a new block. not sure howmuch i can spend just need to get some ideas on price ranges. any info would be great. I dont really nknow alot about this stuff.

The block will still be good most likely. If you have money than do whatever floats your boat. If you are looking for the best bang for buck, I'd do a 383 stroker with your block. I say that because you may need a crank and since you are buying one, might as well make it a stroker crank. Cam could be tore up as well so why not through a cam in it. It really depends on what got tore up. With no oil pressure at all, that could have caused a lot of problems. You wont know what the best option is money wise until you tear into your engine and see what is salvageable.

I agree with Raven. Tear it down before you decide. Me personally, id go with a heads/cam 408.

ID first figure out whats wrong, then figure out what i can afford. Not sure id ever make more than I am right now in this car just because itll never be usable unless you drop money on a built rear, i dont care what anyone says, gforce or dss axles arent gonna make this car capable of being launched at the strip at 4500rpm+.

A new fully built stroker short block is just over $4K. If you were to fix yours and build it with a stroker kit it will be about $500 less. If you stroke it you'll need head work and a cam. Add new timing chain, oil pump, lifters, rockers, push rods, intake work/new one, tune, other incidentals and doing the work yourself and your looking at about $8-9K.

The stock 243 heads would be alright on a 383. Don't forget they come stock on the LS2 and a 383 isn't much bigger. A 383 is the biggest an LS6 can go without lot of work. But, a good set of heads would give you a nice hp bump but you can get by with your 243's if you just want to build the short block first. Bottom line, your gonna have to spend some money at this point, how much is up to you. But 07 CTS-V is right. If you are going to build a nice forged stroker short block, you are gonna drop some coin.

Basically the identical issue sidelined my cammed 04 V in January 2010. Thank God I was still under the GMPP extended warranty. Got a brand new LS6 from GM. Still basically stock right now with about 8k miles on it. The swap costed $8k. All I paid was $50.

I would go with an ERL motor. Short blocks start off at $3500 making between 500 & 600 hp to the fly wheel N/A. $5500 for the 600 to 800hp range to the flywheel N/A.

I would not.
What good is knowing the 5000 dollar price tag for a short block? You know he has an LS6. Will any of the TOP part of his LS6 fit these 500cu inch short blocks you talk about or even be able to properly support the bottom end volume wise? No.
I see a 10K price tag real quick. There are endless better options of achieving 500rwhp for less $$. with the LS6 block he has... I would personally work with what the OP has.

I mean what do they (ERL) charge for their turnkey 632hp engine? I bet you its 16K +

Update
here is what is getting done.

Bottom end is fine so no change there
New oil pump ofcorse
SPEC Clutch Kit Stage 1
SPEC GM Steel Flywheel
Comp Cams Timing Set
vrx5 236/238 .601/.605 113 cam
new rollers and pushrods
on the exhaust i am doing a muffler delete with a xpipe
and if i can come up with the extra money then cooks headers and
port and polish on heads. I already have a cold air intake.

I am trying to have all this done by end of Jan 2011
should be exciting.

ordered some parts last week.

Hope it is all worth it would like to see some decent HP gain out of this.
