Default Did you have your stock wheels widened?

How does that work? Can they add width in both directions? Meaning, can you specify both width and offset? For a stock V1, what would you specify to run 275 tires out back? 9"? 9.5"? What works with stock suspension? Is there room to add an inch to the inside?

Or Should I just shut up and go crawl under my car with a tape measure?

Also, who do you have experience with and what's the approx cost? A pair of wheels is about 300 bucks. How much to widen a pair with a reasonable amount of confidence?

you can only add width to the back (inside) of the rim. So by adding to the inside you are increasing the offset. If you want the wheel to sit out further, you need a small spacer.

Also, most company's widen in 1" increments. Weld-craft is well known and has a very good reputation. Thats who I would use (almost had them widen another set of wheels).

My friend used wledcraft for his Cobra R and they did a phenomenal job but on the first gen Vs there really isnt much reason to widen them. He had $500 into having both his widened with shipping and all.

Beg to differ.

Depends, whether your lowered or not and the size of the wheel spacer.

Unless you jack up the rear and use massive wheel spacers it's not gonna happen without a mini tub.

BAsically I meant why drop upwards of 1500 bucks between stock wheels being widened, trailing arms and tires for any aditional inch of tire width? You can fit 275s on the stock wheels and whats the biggest you can go with a 9.5 inch wheel? 295?

As I recall, back in the day, a few folks over on CF had their stockers widened. Doing some searching, it looks like they were able to do 9.25" with a small spacer (5mm).

With a bit of math...

Stock 18x8.5" +42mm = ~6.40" backspacing
Stock wheel widened to 9.25" w/5mm spacer = ~6.96" backspacing
Linea Corse 19x10" +47mm = 7.35" backspacing (caused some light rubbing on some cars)
Forgestar 19x10" +42mm = 7.16" backspacing

The trailing arms angle inward, so the bigger the wheel diameter, the more backspacing you can run. (Those are MAP trailing arms in the pic, but the stock arms also angle inward, just not quite as much.)

Depends whether you want the tire to fit properly or not. Sure you can stuff a 275 on a 8.5 rim, that's pretty sloppy. Or you can have a 295 on a rim that it fits on. I have a 295 on a 10" and it fits perfectly, without being a saftey liability.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of 275 on the stock width. Cheapest wheels that are wider than stock and still 18" diameter are team dynamics. So you're looking at a grand if you're lucky enough to find a used set or 1300 new. A pair of stock wheels is 300, I already have 4 of them but would want a full set for snows, and just swap treads on the front, and have a second pair of wider ones for the rear. That's quite a bit of money left to put towards a wider stock wheel so I figured I'd ask the question.

Wheel spacers are as undesirable to me as the 275 on the stock wheel. Trailing arms are probably the bank buster for this solution. Probably have a year until my 245 tires are worn out anyway.

Thanks for all the info everybody.

Why is that? There's lots of internet lore about how spacers are evil incarnate, but most of that is bunk.

I know there's not much mechanically wrong, I just don't like the idea. To do it properly, new lugs and hub centric spacers would be needed and aren't cheap. Changing lugs can be a pain too.
