Okay I'm taking my headlights out and going to paint the inside Black and clean the front to clear coat them. Any one done this? Any suggestions on how to split them? I'm thinking in the oven for about 15 minutes should melt the glue to separate them. Just wondering if someone has done this.

I had a buddy do that on a 94 TT Supra and it seamed to work fine. I can ask him some details

 

Living in Houston im surprised you havent seen some around. Its been done before and you shouldnt have any issues if done right by you or a good painter.

 

I've done it on my old 01 SS baking them for about 15min they came apart fairly easy. II'm just a little worried about this being HID and all. Wondering if I need to remove some hidden screws or anything funny like that. I'm going to tackle it tomorrow.

175-200 degrees for 5-10 min. You want it warm to the touch and should pull apart. Once you start just use a box knife to slice the glue....good luck.

I did it to my v and ruined the lights. Thus the ebay halos are now waiting for their HID's. But...advice:

I baked mine at 300 for 8-9 minutes and that is both too long and too hot. So if i were to do it again id be 250 for about 6 minutes. Then start prying slowly apart. If it cools down stick it back in the oven for a while and keep prying. You will be prying against the lens so if you do it too hard you will be f*cked (proper f*cked). Also i would remove the bulbs, ballasts, and more importantly the three round access caps! They will melt before the headlight will. Then, build something out of wood, a jig of sorts, so that the light is not sitting directly on the rack. It is not a dijorno pizza, so unless you like parallel grill lines in your headlights, figure something out. The heat gun method did nothing for me, thus why i tryed the oven. i will find some base cts lights at a junk yard and try it all again, but this is no simple easy task. Then you have to ask yourself if the 200$ ebay lights with a 75$ HID kit if it is all worth your trouble or not.

We need to know the MSDS of these lights, so we know their melting point and yield.

Where is Fuzzy when you need him, he knows all these special numbers.....

.....I would say 200-250 to get it nice and warm, but agree anything over would cause a mess.

Update. So I'm moving to plan B as they made these impossible to come apart. I baked them for 15 minutes and nothing put them back in for another 15 minutes and nothing. Then I tried the dremel, and the side where the HID housing sits came apart but the side that has curves is impossible. Then I tried the pry and knife and blam it came apart but one of the corners cracked on the front. FML.
All I have to say is I got them apart but I hate them. Lol. The silicone Glue they are using now is Damn Good. So new replacements are on the way.
I may have my HIDs for sale soon.
