Considering picking up a CTS-V as a DD, got a couple questions
Im not new to the LS1 world by any means, but from my searching it just strikes me wierd that you guys are only getting about what the sticker says for highway mileage. Its been my experience(on LSx powered cars and trucks) that if you ditch the cats, throw on some lts and a nice exhaust, with a tune you pick up 3-4mpg easily if not more. Am I just not looking at the right threads? Im looking to get something that gets in the mid 20s on the highway mpg wise. I like the idea of the CTS-V because Im familiar with all the mechanicals of it and it'll haul *** once Im done with it. I was thinking of buying a used 04/05 model and throwing a maggy on it, with a gt2-3 cam, full exhaust and a tune and that should net me mid 20s mpg wise and over 500rwhp but it seems from the mpg threads Ive read atleast mileage wise Im off on my assumption. Is there something Im missing?

I have been quite disappointed with fuel economy. When you really think about it, there is nothing you can really do for it. On the Nav, one option is to get instantanious mpg. I personally don't really go WOT, however when on it, the display show 0,1,2,3 mpg etc. When equated into mpg overall, the results are low.
On the caddy forum there is a thread going on about this. Myself and another fellow mentioned hearing from Vette owners how much their highway mpg is better.

Vettes get much beter gas mileage because they are at least 500-600 lbs lighter than a cts-v. I do pretty much all "city" driving and get exactly the 15 mpg on the sticker. I made a 3.5 hour round trip to Baltimore and averaged 22.4 without trying (fair amount of trafic, mostly going about 80 mph with a handful of 50-90 WOT runs in there).
trukk did a test with his setup and achieved as high as 30 mpg when he tried. He has lts, cats, corsa, cam, tb, fast, tune, etc.
Point is that you can get mid 20's if you are trying and don't have killer traffic or lots of hills to deal with.

510, You are in West Chester? My gf's bf lives there. During the summer I'm sure we are going to venture that way. Any chance I can peep out what you have going on with your car?

Already had a 420 stroker in my Z71, with a vic jr, edelbrock 4barrel tb, nitrous pro flow plate system, 80e conversion all that good stuff, if I get a V Im going to try to keep it close to stock. Maybe a built 365 LS2 but no strokers this time, that turbo kit looks enticing and may be a way to keep the rear end together since its not instant power. Who knows, if I land the job Ive had my eye on, Ill definately be picking one up and there will be some mods

I just drove from OK to Houston today about 500 miles, had some traffic but nothing major and went through 6 or so towns that made me got to 30mph and stop a few times. I avg'd 25.4. That was doing the math not using the mileage thing on the nav screen. I have exhaust, tune, ls7 clutch/flywheel, and a K&N tube and filter. The trip has quite a few ups and downs so I'd imagine if I were on a mostly flat rode I'd get somewhere around 27 or maybe more.

I have to agree with trukk, when I had the car I could get mid 20's if I never tried to take off at all and just grandma the car around but it’s a CTS-V and I would drive it like one whenever I got annoyed by another car or just wanted to feel some speed then I would get mid to low 10’s. If you drove like a madman everywhere, that car could easily get mid to high single digit MPG's.

BF = best friend like totally bff (best friends forever)
Driving "gas sane!" Hilarious! I tried this for a little while, but it makes me depressed. I got this car to go fast when I want not for ecomy. This car does not like going slow. Tommy Lee Jones says in best in his analogy of the SR71 Blackbird in Space Cowboys. The car works best at speed. Shifts smooth, sounds good. When driving slow, parade clunk and shifter quirkiness. Just drive man, just drive.
And if you plan to do all this to the car, you'd better have a rearend solution up your sleeve.

Ive done alot of reading on the rear end issue and it seems there really isnt any answer besides a 7500$ solution and thats just nuts. Is there really nothing between a stock rear and a bullet proof unit. The furthest Ill probably go is 650-700rwhp, I dont mind spending moneyt o go fast but 7500 for a rear is a bit nuts. Im also not going to be doing alot of drag racing 90% of my racing will be 40+ roll races. From what Ive read going with a high quality driveshaft, better bushings and not dumping the clutch goes a long ways to keeping the diff from whining. Am I right? If Im not going to be able to put over 500rwhp to the ground reliably without spending almost 8 grand then that could be the deal breaker for buying a V

If you're going for that kind of power then even hard 1-2 or 2-3 shifts have the possibility of grenading the stock rear.
