Default Low RPM bucking in a mostly stock CTS-V?

My friend just bought an '05 CTS-V, and it's bucking at low RPMs. All it has is a K&N CAI, and Borla exhaust, 53k miles.

It's been bucking under load at <2K RPMs. It's fine at high RPMs / WOT.

Any ideas what could cause it? Maybe the K&N is screwing with the MAF readings? CEL also came on last night, will scan today.

Thanks
Matt

Most likely the K&N - check for leaks. I had some issues after I installed the K&N and before I got tuned. I never got a CEL, but I do rememeber intermittent bucking issues.

Thanks - will check connections. BTW car is an 04 not an 05. I couldn't find any info besides "call OnStar", so how do you pull DTCs in this car?

you pull DTCs via the OBDII port. Autozone will do it for free.

If you suspect the K&N, I'd recommend buying some CRC Mass Airflow Sensor cleaner and clean that dude. Often, people over oil the filter (even seen them new that way). The excess oil blows through under high flow rates and deposits on the MAS wires. This alters the readings the PCM gets. It won't hurt to clean, that's for sure.

Kerryt1 took the words out of my mouth. Also, look for air leaks on the TB side of the MAF. If you're letting in air and the MAF isn't reading it, it can really throw the car off.

The code is a P0102. Tried cleaning the MAF and the code went away, but came back today. Any ideas in terms of what we should be looking for?

Try cleaning the filter and not putting any/or very little oil on it and cleaning the MAF again. Or, put the stock filter back on and have the k&n tube run into it.

Took the car to NC and back and the problem was very intermittent. Resetting the ECU (pulling fuse) made the problem go away sometimes, other times no luck. A WOT blast here and there seemed to help and driving it part throttle for extended periods seemed to make it worse.

Will try the MAF from my Z06 and take it from there.

I wonder if it has a tune? Maybe get the PCM flashed? NO leaks, exhaust or intake?
