Default Intake Gasket Swelling

I am pulling my motor apart to replace the lifters and I noticed the intake gaskets have swollen to about 120% of their normal size. I assume this is from exposure to gasoline that they do not see in an injected engine.

Has anyone ever had one of these fail? Since these cannot be re-used, I am considering going to paper gaskets out of fear the o ring gaskets will degrade and fail over time.

Nobody else has pulled their intake and found swollen gaskets?

Can you give a link or pt# to both of those styles of gaskets?

I've found on my fuel injected LS1 that whenever I pull the intake the gaskets are slightly swollen and won't go back into the groove of the intake. I can get them to push back in but they instantly pop right back out of the groove. I always thought it was exposure to a small amount of oil or something of that nature. I've been using the FAST ones and I don't know who they are made by.

I see that the paper gaskets come in different thicknesses. What thickness are you paper gasket guys running?

if the intake has o-ring grooves then I would just buy the fel-pro stock replacement ones from a parts store. The super vic has to run the composite gaskets since there are no grooves present. I'm using whatever ones edelbrock suggested on their website.

I remember you had a thread here awhile back that mentioned a magazine article where they ran good heads and a dual plane and made like 500hp. See if you can find it. They had a severe vacuum leak and used double gaskets (.045 x 2) to solve it if I remember correctly. Sorry, I can't remember if it was Car Craft or Hot Rod.

My question is weather or not you can use a flat paper style gasket on an O ring style intake and not run into leak issues between the grooves and the printo seal on the felpro intake gasket? I would try the thin gasket first. I would think that the thicker gasket is for milled heads where your intake to head alignment might be slightly off. Just my .02. Hope it helps, Eric L

My car has been apart for a little while. Today I started cleaning everything up for re-assembly. I found that my intake gaskets that had swollen to 120% of their previous size have dried out and shrunk back to their normal size. In fact, they look like new. Have I entered the twilight zone? Seriously though, I still do not know what this is going to mean as far as long term durability.

Well, look at it this way. It's better they swell while installed than shrink!

Ethanol content in the fuel makes rubber seals swell. Been there with a few things over the years they always shrink back after drrying out 100%
