Default Rear end Dilemma

I'm trying to pay some more attention to the ole Camaro lately. I really want to change the rear end gears. I'm sure you can predict my question. I'm not dragging my car. But I'm really worried that I will just grenade my stock gm, for $600 I can get a set of 410's installed and for about 3500-4000 I could get a ford 9" its just soo much money.

I could spend it but then I couldn't really justify upgrading my Allison in my duramax. which would be about the same $... The wife would serve me my ***** on a platter.

Most if not all runs I do is rolling pulls. But then again my luck I would double clutch it in 2nd and blow it up.

If you are not trying to launch from a dead stop, then you really aren't missing much, but that is an awful lot of motor for a stock 7.5 rear.

What kind of tires do you run? A lot of times on the street with 4.10s first gear becomes all but useless with a manual transmission. Just spins the tires.

stock tires and rims... 245s maybe? not very big. I want to put on some tt2 and some DR's just for looks and to get a little taller tire. But not for launching. lol I'm not scared to admit it I'm more of a mall crawler than a light to light guy. Don't get me wrong I'll run the car but only on the high way where I'm less likely to kill someone...

Then I would run it just the way it is.

Trust me Ls engine + Drag radials= 10 bolt grenade...did that with my heads and cam 98 Camaro and not only did I have to shell out $500 for a new rearend, but $3000 for a new transmission as well...if you do use drag radials then stick to the highway, from a roll type racing...romping on it from a dig will light the fuse if you know what I mean!

yeah I know what you mean wildcamaro. Zone I see used 9'' and 12 bolts around, but I don't know what will fit and what really wont. I mean I have all the equipment in my garage to fab something (welders, torches and such) But I just don't have any experience in the rear end department.

Can I get any 9'' or 12 bolt housing and make it work? or do I have to have a specific one?

Check this out. It seems like a decent deal. I could get it fixed and put it in my car. http://dallas.craigslist.org/mdf/pts/4023217568.html

If you're doing mostly roll runs on the highway, the 3.42s should be fine. In fact, I'm actually switching from 3.73s to 3.42s in my car (8.5" 10 bolt), mainly to reduce the amount of shifting on the track. The car in my footer spends most of its time back and forth between 50 and 135 MPH.

Another thing to think about: I understand that 4.10s in a 7.5 are a bit thin, compared to numerically lower gears, which will impact endurance. Your dough might be best spent on the truck.

OP, i'm running the stock 10 bolt with 4.10's and dr's, but with a Trutrack upgrade, and make around 550 rwhp/rwtq and have no problems. Like you i mainly do roll races, and don't launch the hell out of it, wheelhop, etc...

This is what kills the rear the fastest! The 7.5 with a GOOD posi, axles and gears can surprising hold up to a launch. But wheelhop is the deal breaker.

I bet if you did the fab work yourself you could get a 9" in for about $1500 with all aftermarket goodies.

There are few threads in here that show how folks put in 8.8 rear ends for relatively cheap too.

This is my plan. I got a 8.8 for 100$ from a friend with tru-trac and 4.10s. Gunna do a spool and 3.55 gears, axles, and stuff but this is the cheap part. Suspension, driveshaft, wheels and tires to utilize the built enough rear is spendy!
