I got a 82 z-28(fuel inj.) with a motor gone to heck and i'm wondering if a 5.0 from a 86 caprice would mesh at all (motor mounts, tranny, etc.). any help would be appreciated

82 is very old, I think it's probably the "crossfire" TBI setup.
But at the bottom it's still the good 'ol small block Chebby.
I say, screw the EFI here, get a 4-bolt 350 crate motor and
put a decent small 4BBL and aluminum intake and headers
on there, and enjoy. Keep it simple....

82 was indeed CFI (2 throttle bodies). There are some sick pups who like those intakes, but I agree about just putting the carb on it. A used Edelbrock Performer intake and a 600 cfm carb would work great.
The Caprice motor should bolt right in, and all of your accessories should bolt right up. I put a 92-93 Caprice crate motor in to my 79Z. Everything went on perfectly, except I did have to change the flywheel (1-pc rear main seal on the 92-93). The 86 should still have the 2-pc rear main tho.

yeah you guys are right its the CFI version, guess i don't know a whole lot about those things, wouldn't i be better off with a single tb than a carb or would that just be too much horseshit to convert from the crossfire setup.

87-up are different heads/intake/rear seal, and an LT1 would basically bolt in too but an LS1 is a totally different animal , nothing interchanges with the older engines. the 86 should swap right in , no prob.

well the caprice engine wasn't the greatest, so i'm looking for other options, how big an engine could i get in there without having to redo the engine mounts or any thing other than the tranny; which i'll replace with a manual since i've heard the automatics don't last long on any thing bigger than a 305. also i'm wondering what would be the best performing ram air setup?

Any 1st gen. SBC will fit, 305, 350, 383, 400... you can even put a huge stroker in there if you wanted. They all have the same dimensions. A nice 350ci would likely be the best bang for the $.
Screw the efi unless you want to spend $ to majorly upgrade yours... and for that car it's not worth puting the money into it.

Anyway, since you don't have any wiring for EFI, i'd just stick a nice carb'd 350 in there. You could go with a crate engine, or just build one up. But like was mentioned, you can go with a 400 if you so desire.
