Default What does (Z28) stand for?

Me and a friend both have Z28's and were talking about what it stands for and could come up with nothing that sounded right. A little help would be great...

Yes, that's correct. Z28 is actually the RPO code for the option package that makes up the Z28. It was a catchy sounding RPO, so they decided to use it as the model name. Just like the WS6, Z24, Z34, Z71....you get the idea.

So then the letter and the numbers signify nothing. It is just a code as a whole?

Exactly. Just a GM code.

You will find that code (along with many others) on the SPID (service parts identification) sticker on your driver's door jamb. You will also notice that LS1 is on that same sticker, assuming you have an LS1 Z28.

Going back to the original introduction of the Z28 Camaro back in 1967.........

"Z" codes were used for option packages available on most Chevrolet products. ie: Z27 was the option code for the "SS" package on a Camaro that same year...Z03 was the option code for the Impala SS package..........

The Z28 Camaro in '67 was the first time the option code was ever used as the "name" for a specific model. A really good marketing idea for sure, as the Z28 moniker stood as a performance pinnacle for Chevrolet for some 35 years......

plus the "Z28" option code was just that, an option and the cars didn't have ANY badges labeling them as Z/28 until mid 1968 models. The only way you could identify the Z/28 (other than the 302 engine) was the hood and deck stripes on 67-68 models, because they were unique to the Z/28 only.

Not only that, Z28 was and is the original "Z" car. Nissan copied GM and it sucks

as noted above, Z28 was the RPO code used in 1967. it wasn't a model, but the RPO code caught on as the name of that specific option package, and Chevrolet capitalized upon that beginning in 1968. starting then, the Z28 badges were present on the car. when you ordered a first gen Z28, you got the 302 motor only - no other optional motors. by ordering a Z28, you were limited to a manual transmission (no automatics), a coupe (no convertible option), front disc brakes and no air conditioning.

Yup all are correct.
Z28 was an RPO option on a V8 Camaro from 1967 through 1974.
Z28 emblems first appeared in 1968.
Z28 became it's own model when it returned in 1978 (after a 3 year hiatus) and stayed that way through 1987 when the IROC-Z took it's place.
(1985-87 both Z28 and IROC-Z were available)
1988 through 1990 was IROC-Z only.
1991 through 2002, Z28 was it's own model again.

It came back in 1977 model year after being off the option list for 1975-76 models.

Default z28

z is the last letter in the alphabet so that lets you know where you stand and the 28 means if you own one past the age of 18 your going through a early midlife crisis and are probably starting to bald

About 25 years ago I had a magezine with a really good article about the dialogue that took place when the decision was made to name the special Camaro. I still remember parts of it nearly verbatim. I wish I still had the magezine.

As I remember it, they were trying to decide on a name and the working drawings had the RPO code Z28. One of the guys noticed it and said, "Z28 sounds really cool, why don't we use it?" and the rest as they say, is history.

I beleive this was part of the build up for the Trans Am series race cars, which as we all know spawned the birth of the 302.

Great history guys. Nice thread.

Very true, most car companies had to build a certain # of cars for general sale in order to have them "legally" race in certain series. For example, the reason Boss 429 Mustangs had over 500 per year in 1969-1970 so they could see racing in NASCAR or the like, while in drag racing, the minimum was 50 cars (thus the 1969 ZL-1 aluminum block Camaros had 69 made, and they are legal to run in stock/super stock eliminator).

First year of the Z/28 had 602 cars, thus they made the minimum ruling, then people caught on and Chevrolet started promoting the car more in the early spring of 1968, and the following year close to 7200 sold, followed by over 20,000 Z/28's in 1969.

Just more useless info in my brain...

Derek
