It's at $140K! These cars are going up in value fast. And BTW: No Z28's were made by the factory with the X-ram setup. It was over the counter or dealer install only. Also, only 201 vehicles were ordered with the JL8 4-wheel disk brake setup, although it too could be ordered over the counter or dealer installed upon purchase. I'd like to see the Broadcast Sheet for this car if it's available.

I don't really like that blue. Plus the thick white stripes, eh. But whatever, it's a Z28!!!

One question comes to mind, why did Chevy make Z28s when they were already making SSs?

Actually, it was 206! LOL! Also, that car is NOT an original JL8 car. Its a first week of Nov Los Angeles built car and the JL8 option was not available at the beginning of the year, it was made available sometime in late Jan and was discontinued in July. The low VIN# (7752) backs up the 11A on the cowl tag but it still cant be a "real" JL8 car (as in factory installed!) And yes they are going thru the roof pricewise but for $140+K I could go buy several of them and have change left over! I would like to see if the car has the big front brakes that were part of JL8 as lots of people that add the rears dont do the fronts. Again, its a nice car, but it aint $140+K nice! JMO, YMMV, Bill

Lot of good info here, but a total of 206 Camaros (not limited to just the Z/28 model) were equipped with the JL8 4-wheel disc set-up, and although previous Z/28 models in 68 and even a few rumored '67's had 4-wheel discs, they were dealer installs or counter parts. The factory option was first available in 1969, and with over 250,000 '69 Camaros made, 1 of 206 narrows down the # of possible combos and as such increases the value.

The Z/28 was created to allow the car to participate in the Trans-Am series with the 305 cubic inch limit. 500 car minimum was needed, and first year 602 were produced, but without any Z/28 badging at all. Only the hood and deck stripes gave notice of a true Z/28.

BTW, That car is extra sweetness!

My bad. 206 not 201. It's been a while since I've had to recite 1st gen facts. And as old as the cars are getting even clones are getting respect.

So then why didn't they just make the SS be able to compete in it?

That sounds like this Chevy Management team manuever.

Z/28 was the box you checked on the order form. It was an engine and suspension/road racing package. It's winning heritage on the track grew it into the legend it is today.

The SS cars had specific engine/multi- tranny combos. 350cid to start with (2 speed PG, 3m and 2 4m trannys) and 396cid (same trannys with addition of a3 th400....a2 had 1.82 vs 1.78 1st gear) being added in Nov 66 to compete with Ford putting 390cid in the Stang. The Z28 was the only Camaro to be offered with a 15" dia rim (SS's were 14"). Spring and shock rates were specific to the Z28 as it was a handling and braking package (mandatory disk brakes....which were not required on 350 or 396 SS's) as was a specific engine (under 305 cid) and transmission (M22 "rockcrusher" was mandatory) for homlogation with SCCA rule of 500 min production run. So as I hope you can see, the Z28 was a unique vehicle that had few things in common with an SS car other than exterior and interior trim.

In 1969 all SS models came with disc brakes as standard equipment. Also the M22 4-speed was not mandatory in a Z/28. A 4-speed transmission was mandatory for the Z/28, but in 1969 the buyer could option either the M20, M21 or M22 transmission.

Totally correct! M22s were not as common as most people think they were! They cost twice what an M20 or 21 cost and they were usually only available on the "killer" cars. You couldnt get an M22 in a SS350 or a 325 or 350 Hp 396 car, it had to be a 375 HP L78 or a Z28. There are 2 good "rules of thumb" for Chevys back then that quell lots of stories and thats M22s generally only came as a further option beyond a "normal" 4 speed and were only available on solid lifter motors and you could never get AC on anything with solid lifters either. I forget the exact figures now but years ago when we were researching all this stuff it came down to the fact that averaged out, M22s were only about 3% of 4 speed production so that makes them quite rare.
