I am a third gen freek. I have had a total of 10 different 3rd gens and still own 3 third gens including one that was my first car. My first car has a 9" currie rear and a richmond gear 6 speed with a strong running 350-(11.0 on nos) but that was cool back in 90. My 4th gen kicks my 3rd gens *** in every department. I ripped out my 350 from my third gen cause my 4th gen was about to kick it's *** with pass on spray. I have a low compression 383 bullet proof bottom end with a 871 blower going in the 3rd gen so thatit remains top dog in my garage. Also have a 87 IROC-Z and a 89 GTA. 3rd gens are my first love but I gotta vote for my 4th gen SOM WS6

3rd gens can look awesome, but I can't get over the mullet image they have gotten. I respect a nice 3rd gen, but if you can't pump some $$$ into it to make it stand out above the rest then it will never earn much respect.

i love the 4ths the most but i got a soft spot for the 3rds as i damn sure miss my 88 Formula. I love IROC Zs as well and my bro-in-law has a sweet 84Z28 A4 w/ the AutoForm 2 seater convertible conversion which is pretty sweet and its got a few go fast goodies, runs mid 14s which isnt to bad for a 5.0L H.O. carb motor A4 with a couple bolt-ons, intake, exhaust, etc

3rd gens are some of the coolest looking cars out there. Where I grew up *and still am lol* alot of the kids who grew up with stories of badass muscle cars drive them with no exhaust thinking because it beat one old lady not racing in an acord they are the IMPORT SLAYER. well my hatch has raced soo many and never had a problem not to say they can't be fast or anything just who drives them in this area are the domestic ricers.
So 3rd gens I really loved but hated when I drove my Honda daily, now I drive a camaro daily I never get revved on by them they are scared
I really like the 3rd gen alot the drivers here are dicks though. I see alot of them stepping up to LT1 cars now as price drops.
4th gen is just a better car imo, I love the options offered I boght mine for the LS1 not because its a camaro or a pony car. The motor chassis and drive train are amazing you can handle great make gobs of power be cozy and have sane fuel milage.
I can't ask for more at almost 21.
I think the 5th gen probbly will be a better car, will I buy one I dunno.

You really have to see a clean 3rd gen to appreciate these cars. It's rare to see one anymore that hasn't been turned into a ragged out piece of crap but when they are in good shape they are beautiful cars. I owned 3 over the years and when I look back at pics of my old 1988 5.7 TPI IROC I remember how awesome these cars could look. The 3rd gen GTA Trans Ams included.
With that said, the two 4th gens I've owned are just better all-around cars. They ride better, are more solidly built, have nicer interiors, get better gas mileage and would stomp all of my 3rd gen cars easily in the 1/4. Plus, the WS6 I bought new in 02 is one of the sexiest looking cars on the road.
If forced to pick I'd have to go with the 4th gen but both cars have their appeals.

I voted for 3rd gen. Like many others before me, I have also owned both a 3rd and 4th gen. I owned a 97 Z28, and still own an 89 Formula 350 TPI. Although the 97 Z28 offered better interior, more of a solid feel.... I just favor the 3rd gens ability to be build up with either an L98, LT1, and or an LS1 or whatever u want to throw at them. 3rd gens are cheaper vehicles to purchase and have ample room to work under the hood. I would like once again to have the best of both worlds (3rd and a 4th gen); and park an '02 BLACK WS6 next to the '89 Maui Blue Formula350.

Hmmm..I have had 3 third gens...a 88 Firebird, a 1982 Z28 w/cross fire(turd)and my 85 Iroc-Z....I have had 2 4th gens...my old(traded in)95 Formula and my 2000 T/A....I voted for the 3rd Gen. I love my 4th gens and all but man everytime I look at my 88 Bird and my Iroc all I can say is wow if only weren't screwed by the mullet phase! My Iroc is a great driver..she handles excellent more now than ever as I put all new suspension in her and my TPI is so fun for daily driving with the lowend torque only a TPI can give you. Its not as comfortable as my T/A but its my baby! Never gonna sell it...T-Tops down and fun in the mullet machine!!! Now only if I had the ballZ to grow a mullet that would make your all's day!
