Default Lt1? Any good?

Just looking for some input, i'm 17 and i'm looking to get an fbody. With the money i got it'll probably have somewhere between 60-100k on the odometer. Some people have told me some really bad stuff about LT1's and i want to know how good they are...

the LT1 is not a bad platform.....what is the bad stuff you have heard.

Let me guess...they said the opti sucks.

Mine has the same opti on it that the car left Canada with.

Well you are looking at newest at 10 year old sports car, some problems will be inherent.

The Lt1 isn't a bad motor at all though.

LT1's are a good strong engine. i prefer LT1 over an LS1 any day. it doesn't take that many bolt ons to make that thing quick. i mean quick.

the LT1 and the old school SBC use basically the same block...how many people do you know breaking the blocks.

I am going to be making ~800 fwhp with nothing more than splayed main caps and a OEM 2 bolt block

hell, ive sprayed my opti when de greasing the engine and it toughed it out.

the blocks are actually stronger than LSx aluminum blocks. why do you think the new LSx block is now cast iron.

How do you figure better torque? Look at Dynos the LS1 stock for stock beats the LT1 it just peaks a little sooner....

both of the blocks are strong, the alloy lsx block are plenty strong to
make well into 1000 hp. but the iron lsx are even stronger than the alloy blocks.
the new LSx is iron because enthusiasts and racers demand a block tht
will handle up to 2000 hp and big block displacement. and with the LSx
line of superior high flow heads, they warrant a bore as large as 4.125
or more. they are iron because they will be running large bores. and to take
advantage of the heads and intakes available now and the ones in development.

there may be some issues with core shift, and that would be reason
for the blocks to crack, or if overheats to a point whre it can cause damage
to the block. the opti is a weak link in the motor design, most all LT1
hardcore racers usually convert to dist. and or convert sbc intakes and heads
for use on the lt1. sure there are racers with hi power motors still
using opti's. but it is a rare condition that a opti will live long with a powerful engine. i have gone thru my share of opti's
word of advise do not purchase opti's from autozone, advance, oreilly.or
even napa. unless they carry a gm part #. or go with the aftermarket accel
or msd units

I had a '93 Z28 and a '97 Ws6. While the LSx is a better platform IMO, the LT1 can make power and be reliable. If you can afford an Ls1 without breaking the bank, go with an Ls1. But if $$$$ is limited... an Lt1 is a great choice. Just shop around for one that hasn't been abused.

I know several guys with LT1 cars and they have higher mileage with very few issues. From what I have learned, they are a very good platform, just starting to age a bit. I will tell you though that all the guys I know want to sell there LT for an LSX....

I havnt had any issues with my LT1 so far. Mine only has 20K on the clock, but still. There are a lot of things that can go wrong with an engine over a 10 yr. period but I have yet to have any. I love my LT1... best looking camaro in my opinion
