The G-Body Swap Thread
#1341
The standard run-of-mill power steering box used in G-bodies was the Saginaw 605 box. It has a bulkier casting than the quick ratio 700 series box in the area of the pulley to accommodate a drilled internal hydraulic passage that travels through the casting. Having the quick ratio box is a real plus when doing a swap in a G-body for clearance issues as well as for the improved steering performance it provides. You shouldn't have any clearance problems with the stock truck P/S pulley.

Wow a lot of info in this thread. I am working on a 5.3 swap into my 87 GN. My rods show up this week then off to the machine shop with the block and 317 heads, putting compstar 6.125 rods in with wiseco 5.3 pistons. I have a stage 2 Extreme Automatics 200-4R that I am gonna use initially to get the car driving and then will save for a 4L80e over the next winter.

Sounds like a fun project. The stage 2 200-R4 that Extreme Automatics put together is a stout transmission. What intake and throttle body do you plan to use? You will need a cable set up for the TV cable. If you go with a 4L80 you will need a newer (E38) ECM to control it.
I have been hearing the 411 pcm's can basically be setup for anything with the right OS, any truth to this? Wiring and PCM is a bridge I will have to cross later after I my turbo picked out and figure out placement, but I am looking heavily at the PCI harness.

I had asked that in the Hooker thread and we are unsure. I currently have the V pan only motor but bought the full shebang from Hooker for the GBody swap - my V pan has twin drains for a turbo setup I am not doing. Anyhow the holley/hooker setup sets the motor back .75" approx v. something like the carshop 1" set back plates. It would be very close and looks like it might, but I'd be concerned about steering arm clearances.
When I get everything in I'll do some measuring and mock up for you.

Does it hang below the cross member at all? It would be great if you can post some picks.

Guess that mounted the ecm in the interior of the car:
I have a PSI conversions harness to go into my car and I have questions where/how you guys mounted the ECM. I have a TCM, ECM and the fuse box to deal with.....so it is a bit more challenging.

Awesome pics. I guess one thing I am not seeing with the CTS-V pan is why there is interference with running AC? Has anyone though about trying to adapt the GN's accessory drive to the LS motor? I keep thinking of ways to run AC and put a turbo on the car but I guess I will tackle that when the time comes.

If I had the time and could work in Peace I would make the AC work. Fact is I'm under the gun dealing with time, kids, house, limited shop time etc...
I have some other pictures that show the steering knuckles when fully turned. The passenger side doesn't come close but the drivers side just barely skims it. It's like the width of a mosquito wing so I'm going to let it fly and monitor it closely.

I also have the PSI harness. I still trying to figure out where to mount it. At first I wanted it to go in the stock location of the Monte ECM but the LS1 PCM is simply too large. I'd like to see if I can put the fuse box in the kick panel location and the pcm somewhere close by.

Posting what radiator hoses I used here to maybe help others.
Im using a Dewitt G body LS swap radiator, it's a dual crossflow, both fittings are on the passenger side.
Lower radiator hose is a Dayco PN 71968. It is long & had to be cut to fit. It doesnt hit anything.
Upper hose is Dayco 71981, it fit perfectly, no trimming at all. May not fit for you if you are using a different water pump.
