In this pic I have the slip yoke all the way in and up against something inside the transmission. I felt spongy when I bottomed it out. I took a light and shined up in the tail shaft (felt like a proctologist) to see what I was up against. There is a rubber ring right behind the reluctor for the speed sensor. I guess that is what I was bumping into. I will mark the driveshaft at this point to make sure once it is in the car and bolted in that this will not cause me any clearance issues. If so I will face off the end of the slip yoke to allow for the needed clearance. Hopefully this wont be an issue.

Here is a side shot of the #1310 and the #1350 slip yokes. You can see the overall size difference. Not only is it longer it is a lot heavier built. Larger bearing caps and a wider cross section.

Sorry to make a big deal out of this but that is all I have done today. I figure I would be specific just in case you guys were needing to modify your existing driveshafts.

I didn't look too thoroughly in the rest of your post, but did you mention if the T56 yoke might be the same as another GM transmission? I need a complete driveshaft but instead of getting a new one made from scratch, I might look the salvage yard first.

Your build is looking good too!

69-er- I used the original yoke from the Powerglide that came in my car. This is actually the same driveshaft that was installed from the factory. I have used this yoke in the following transmissions:
1) Powerglide
2) 350 Turbo-Hydramatic
3) Saginaw 4 speed

It does fit the output shaft of the T56 also. The only issue I have with the factory yoke is it is short. I have read somewhere where the spline engagement needs to be longer so as not to damage the output shaft.

Thanks! I did notice that the T56 will take all of the longer yoke of yours. Now, if the output shaft splines are the same length as the yoke, then it would make sense the yoke should be the longer style to match. I will look inside my tranny to see if I can tell how long the splines are.

I'm thinking it would be better if we used a new custom shaft.

I went back and re-read my reply to 69-er and realized I contradicted myself. Yes the old yoke worked on the T56 but No I am not reusing the old yoke as I have upgraded to the longer #1350 yoke. Sorry I hope I didn't mislead anyone. The new yoke may be a touch too long and I will mark it in the bottomed out position. This way when I install it I will know for sure of how much travel I will have and not worry about damaging anything. If I am correct in my thinking , I will need at least 1" of travel.

Is the Camaro in the pic your project? If not what are you working on? Do you have a link?

Thanks guys! And good luck to y'all on your swaps. Nothing I love more than the first gen Camaros. I bet the 240 with fly with the LS1.

Great thread! I'm following every bit of it.
If there is anything you might have done different or you find new info on what would have worked better/easier, post it up. I appreciate all that you have done so far.
When I start on mine, I'll have a good guide to follow.

Ucanthangwme- Thanks and thats a good idea on what could have been done differently. Let me think on that one for a few days. I know one thing that could have been done differently that would be to buy a kit that includes the engine stands, mounts, headers, and tranny crossmember like the Hooker setup. I am not sure if their kit is all that good but its a great idea. It would have saved me a ton of time.

Sorry for the delay on posts. I have been working late and having to run back and forth to check up on a particular job I am running at work. If this part is accepted our company is looking at 1.2 billion parts a year. The company I cannot say who is a large manufacturer of a well known MP3 player. Perhaps the best known MP3 players. This part is so friggin small I cannot grip it to mic it. Everybody wants smaller and smaller toys so the fasteners keep getting smaller and smaller. I did manage to knock most of the grime off of the tranny, and the engine compartment. This is sort of the boring part of the build but it has to be done if you want it to look right. I have a bad habit of half-assing this part from time to time. I spend extra hours double checking clearances, making parts, and assembling everything but always seem to fly right through the neatness part. I will try to post some pics tomorrow. I have to either seam seal my welds on the firewall panel or body fill them. Body filler is easier to work with but seamsealer is once and done and has some elasticity to it. After that it is remove the items not needed for this swap and start painting. This will take all of a day and should be complete tomorrow. After the beauty part is done I will reinstall the entire assembly for good, I hope. I received my wiring harness in on Wednesday and need to beauty it up a little. The guy that rewired it for me done everything I ask but did leave one thing for me to do. He didnt extend my MAP sensor plug to the front next to the IAC and the TPS. He said to send it back and he would take care of it. I will just do this myself. I am going to unwrap the tape he slathered on and try to straighten some areas just for show. I will also need to get some wire loom and cover the taped areas. All in all he did a good job that is if it cranks up.

You need to start a thread Tango so we can keep up with your progress. Good luck on your restoration and on your build. I had my paint and body done a few years back and it was well worth the money spent. I looked at my car dismantled for around 13 years total before I commited to having it done. Between buying houses, kids, work, and marriage the car was on the bottom of the list.
