The old drive shaft was the correct size and didn't make contact with the floor. It seems it was just to small of a tube.
I made some repairs to the floor for now until I decide if I want new pans. It's a driver not a show car, so don't know if its worth it at this point.
Ran out of shielding gas so broke out the flux core. I hate it but it works in a jam. Big thanks to my buddy Robbie for working the brace back into shape.
Here is what I had to cut out.
The new 3.5 inch drive shaft, the old shaft was only 3 inch.

Exhaust looks great, Like the V-Band clamps, was thinking about the same for my car, would sure make it easy to remove that X-pipe for servicing. What type are they and where did you get them? Do they have a lip that enterlocks on them? A seal in between the flanges? Sorry so may question just never played with them in an exhaust system, and at $50/60 bucks each not sure I really need them.

Thanks for the kind words.
The v bands are awesome and do not require a gasket. These are not the 'new' type with the interlocking rings. But seal great and make the exhaust so much nicer to work with.
On eBay, ske automotive parts, sells the band and flanges as a kit for under $20. Can't beat the price any where. I highly recommend it. Good luck!

just read through the whole thread. Awesome job on your Chevelle. I have been in the process of setting my engine and trans in mine and have hit a couple of snags on the oil pan. My question to you, did you have to modify the front cross member to fit the camaro pan? I have been trying to find one local to try, but looking at yours, I may just pull the trigger and order one.
Thanks,
HEEP

I have been trying to fit a 5.3 in my 70 Chevelle. I keep hitting snags. This thread has helped me figure out what I need to do. Thanks for all the great pictures and detailed info.

The drive from Chattanooga thru the smokey mountains was amazing. We are undecided about next yrs tour. We live in Texas. Texas to North Carolina to Wisconsin to Texas is a big haul... But I'm sure it would be worth every bit of the drive. Hopefully we can meet up in Concorde and do some driving!

The Camaro pan fits with no modifications and leaves you with 1/4 inch clearance crossmember to pan and crossmember to ac compressor. Take your time and don't be afraid to move stuff around. Once you find the sweet spot it will fit like it was made that way!

It's high temp silver spray paint. VHT I believe. It's holding up great. I plan to wrap it soon. Trying to keep heat down, I don't feel it in the car but the trunk is really warm over the axle.

No real update. But I've been driving the car almost daily to work, it's getting great mileage.
On power tour fully loaded with our stuff and beer it was getting 19.3 miles a gallon. I haven't done exact math but I'm getting around the same miles out of a tank of fuel. Mostly highway to work and back, with a few spirited runs here and there. Couldn't be happier!
I have Chevelle 2.0 in the works, more to come.

With almost 7000 miles on the car I figured it was time to do a nut and bolt check. Every thing looked good and only a few bolts needed to be retorqued. Cleaned things up a bit and lubed the chassis.
Only this that I noticed is how greasy/oily the lower ball joints looked around the zerk fitting. Didn't get a pic but seemed dirtier than normal.
