Default 1963 Nova 5.3L with 3-Speed Manual - What flywheel?

Guys, my 63 has inline-6 with 3 speed manual and I want to swap the 5.3L.

I believe the old 6 cyl is normally a 158t Flywheel and the Gen III/IV is a 168t. The old 6 cyl bellhousing will not fit over the 168t flywheel. I think I need the GM 621 11" bellhousing. Correct?

What flywheel & clutch do I need?

Thanks

Waid

It is a 3 speed manual transmission (3 on tree) but not sure if it is a Saginaw.

Thanks

garys 68,

From your link:

The earlier Gen trans had a 6.66" long input shaft with a 0.59" diameter pilot bearing ID. Early T10s and Muncies had 10 spline input.

For 10 spline you can use a flywheel off an 05 Silverado 1 ton truck (Sachs 1050). It bolts to the crank and is drilled for an old school 11" BBC clutch. For pressure plate and 10 spline disk, just get one for any late 60s/early 70s BBC application. I think transmissions switched to 26 splies around 73, so you can even use this flywheel with a 26 spline clutch. The other advantage is that the flywheel is about 0.400" thicker, so the disk is correctly placed on the trans input shaft and the earlier throwout bearing and clutch fork geometry will be the same as the BBC application. Downside is that flywheels extra thickness comes with extra weight. Oh yeah, and the Sachs 1050 flywheel is about $60, and 11" clutch is only about $120.

It is a lot cheapter if you have 10 splines!

Correct?

You can use the Sachs flywheel with either 10 or 26 spline clutch disk. Pre 73 BBC uses10, post 26 spline. They share the same pressure plate.
But I'm pretty sure a 63 will be 10 spline.

Did you ever get this worked out? I am looking at doing the same thing. old 3 speeds are cheap and I grew up driving them.

1999 4.8 was the only year with a 5 speed, go to orileys pick up a flywheel last time I think it was around $50, the clutch from 73-87 works perfect, v8 bell housing, when I did my 1971 c10 I had to fab a bracket for the z bar. Any question p.m. Me

Hi all. Any updates on this? I have a 77 Nova with a column shifted Sag 3 speed and would like to know:
1. if the stock shifter rods were used
2. what exhaust manifolds were used to clear the rods, and
3. Which pilot bushing would work.

Thinking of using the stock Z-bar with the Scoggin pivot ball bracket.

Thanks!

Stock 02 ZO6 vette manifolds will clear the Z bar (see post 6 in the link)
I've also used 98-02 F body
Pilot bearing is listed in the 1st post of the link

Thanks, Gary. I reviewed your sticky and looked elsewhere but haven’t found anyone who was able to make the two column linkages work. Although, I would imagine the Z06 exhaust manifolds would work given they allow clearance for the Z-bar in front of the linkages.
