Butt welding clamps. Harbor Freight and Northern Tool has them.

I haven't got to check in for a while, a lot of nice progress.

Started replacing the lower door skin on one of the side doors. A little work with the shrinker gets the shape just right.

Determined to get this thing “drivable”- at least in and out of the garage and maybe around the block. Ordered the brake lines, and misc; the upper and lower shock mounts; shocks; finally got the custom driveshaft made. Worked on the shock mounts today and removed the rear end to clean it up and paint.

More snowballing! Installed the rear and realized the outer axle seal was leaking. Removed the axles to change the seals- drivers side comes out like butter, passenger side won’t come out. Go rent the tool from the auto parts store (yes the plate didn’t match my bolt pattern-had to make due with one bolt). Took about 350 pulls of the slide hammer to get it out. The passenger bearing wasn’t the best, so of course- now it needs new bearings. Just picked the axles up today with new bearings. I installed the longer wheel studs. I am now working on cleaning/painting all the brake hardware. (Also ordered all new pads/cylinders/springs/etc. to make everything new and shiny). Hey, might as well now!

Looks like a Ford 8.8 with "C" clip retainer replaced with 9" retainer. Nice Work!

Are those 31 spline?

Got the rear brakes finished. Rear end looks much better now that it’s cleaned/painted. I have the rear all plumbed, the front is almost done. Just waiting on a 20” brake line to come in. Then it’s on to bleeding and hopefully if there are no surprises, I will be pissing off the neighbors this weekend going up and down the street! Can’t wait.

Can't quite read the number on the shocks. Can you tell us what they are (KYB...) and why you chose them?

Looks like your O2 sensors are very close to the opening of the exhaust. I assume you're going to add more pipe after the O2.

They are KYB 344085. I chose them based on the length I needed. With the 3 hole lower mount, I needed something that was between 14-16 inches at ride height. Also based on the mounting type I had on upper and lower mounts.

I just ordered the exhaust. It only has Cats on it right now.

Spent another day finishing up the bodywork on the drivers door. I have over 100 hours in this door with the body mods and metal fab/bodywork. UGH! It’s still not perfect but nothing a few rounds of blocking/primer won’t take care of. I shot some epoxy primer on it. Hopefully tomorrow I will bleed the brakes, tie up a few loose ends, and take this baby for the first ever drive! Fingers crossed everything goes well.

Well, here it is- after 10+ years and more money than I’ll admit to, the Hip-E-Van had its first ride today.

Congrats! You left the neighborhood - how far did you go? Any problems discovered during the maiden voyage?

I just went to the end of my street and back. No issues other than the brake pedal doesn’t feel right. I was chasing leaks on both front caliper banjo bolts all morning so I think I need to re-bleed the fronts.
