Been working on fabricating the custom dash. I am using the center bezel from a Ford Edge. I want the dash to flow up to it and look like it came out of a modern vehicle. I started with my wire frame technique and then added strips of metal to keep the curve shapes before it was wrapped in fleece. 7 layers of resin on top, 1 layer of resin and fiberglass mat on the bottom. She is strong and smooth. Ready for a touch of filler and it will be ready to get wrapped in leather. Also started on the ‘hump’ around the gauges. This will be a separate piece done in the same manner. Pics show the steps/progress.
Passenger side will have a spear shape for the vent that flushes in the dash. It will have another small spear insert and will wrap around the side of the dash. I made one but it was too bulky, so I am redoing it. Pic of the bad one.
Moved on to the gauge dash hump, and just started the gauge bezel. The hump will be stitched leather like the dashboard. The gauge bezel will be painted to match the rest of the interior trim either in silver or maybe hydro-dipped in carbon fiber. I am using a spare gauge cluster I have so that I won’t mess up the good one. I glued spacers under the dash hump to account for the fleece and resin that will be on the bezel. Also, to leave a little room for the eventual leather on the hump.
Finished making the gauge bezel and wrapped it in fleece. Ready for some resin. I have to build out the top left corner of the gauge hump due to how the gauge bezel had to sit around the drivers information center buttons. I’m very happy with the results.
Been working on the center console piece. This is 4 pieces that bolt together to make one large, easily removable piece (2 quick latch buttons in rear- last pic shows the 1” hole where they will be) so that you can access the engine cover. This was a bear to make and I have approximately 40 hours into it. The 2 flip-up armrests are out of new Ford Fusions. The dual cup holder is out of a Fusion as well. The sides of this meet up with the silver sides of the front-to-back rear console and end in a taper at the dashboard. Time to wrap in fleece and lay down some resin. I hope to hell it looks as good in my head as it does when it gets wrapped. As I’ve said before you can’t truly get an idea about what a framework piece looks like UNTIL you wrap it.
Started wrapping the console. Still have to do the center section. There are a few things I don’t like about the design but I’m going to have to live with it. I’d say I’m 80% happy with the design.
Been working on the rest of the exterior metal fab and welding. I have both side doors completed and I’ve just moved on to the passenger front door to do the hidden hinges, shaved/Corvette door handle, and shortening the door/step delete.
