Default How do I tell it's a '98 LS1

Are there any codes or obvious features I could look for to be sure an engine/trans/pcm/harness came out of a '98 car?

Valve covers have perimeter bolts. And the coil packs are not on a rack (You have to take one off at a time).

also look for the laser ecthed number on the driver side block near the trans bellhousing.

In the 2nd space there is a letter....

v = 1997
w = 1998
x = 1999
y = 2000
z = 2001

I believe my engine is a '98 shortblock (some numbers on the sensors are dated 10/98) however the upper half is '99+ as it has center bolts for the valvecovers and 853 casting heads. I did notice on the front of the block (driver side) a casting mark that has a "star" with the number 98 in the center of it near the upper portion of the timing cover. This would make me think it is a '98 shortblock.

I was told aside from what the computer reads there is no way to tell exactly what year it is..... Mine didn't come with it.

the '98 PCM has a unique shape to it, its easily recognizable as a '98 unit in comparison to 99+ PCM's.

the '98 PCM connectors on the harness is also unique, so you cannot use a '99+ PCM on a '98 harness, ask me how I know

the '98 water temp sender on the driver side head has a 3 pin connector (newer motors have a 2 pin connector).

the '98 oil pressure sender on the top of the block, behind the intake manifold, has a 2 pin connector (newer motors have a 1 pin connector).

gnx7 it seems you have a 99+ motor, dont be fooled to thinking its a '98 just because some parts were made during 1998, it looks like yours is a 1999 spec motor and thats a good thing.

My harness after cross checking to do the conversion a while back is a '99+; however my water pump is a '98 style.... ? I have center bolt valve covers..... and 853 casting heads.... so the top end is a '99+ style for sure. I think this is a mishmash of parts since some of the dates on some of the sensors/harness are late '98. I just threw in some Katech rod bolts in the bottom end and called it a day for the shortblock strength.

'99+ is preferred....
