Default 4l80e?

Has anyone used a 4L80E in a Camaro swap with an LS-1? Are there any problems with using it? It seems like they would be more durable behind a big power plant

I haven't used a 4L80E but some people I know have. The main problem is just the physical size of it, pretty bulky. If you can make room for it I'm sure it'll handle much more torque than a 4L60E and with no mods to it.

Check out the Automatic Transmission section on this site, there are some people putting 4L80Es in Fbodies there.

I put a 4L80e into a 2000 firebird with pretty minimal fitment issues. Just a lot of little things that had to be done. PM me if you need some more info.

I heard the T-56 is bigger than the 4L80-E..... any truth to that?

I was just wondering if it is a good idea, I have a chance to get the 4L80E already on a 6.0L engine that I am building so I was wondering if it would be feasible to use that instead of getting a 4L60E built..I know they have the first gear of 2.48 vs 3.06... how much heavier are they than a TH-400???

Not sure of the weight difference, but the 1st gear is shallower and the O/D gear is deeper. I think the 4L60E's O/D is .70 while the 4L80E's O/D is .75. I guess it's just a tighter geared trans all together. I am wondering how much that is going to hurt my car off the line and at cruise on the hiway.

I went with the 4L80E because I have seen too many 700R4's and 4L60E's fail under stock power, and I don't want to be stranded by the side of the road. We have had 4L80E's in our rollback car carriers, so if I can pull a long hill at 75-80 MPH with a gross weight of 15,000lbs, I should be able to beat the living shi$t out of my 4,000lb 600-700rwhp turbo car.

Good point about the O/D difference... Well basically you are doing something similar to me , making a 600-700 rwhp Turbo LS-1.... Thats what got me thinking about the 4L80E... I know alot of those guys run TH-400's , and thats fine but i want to drive mine on the street & highway alot... I would say 90% street, so the O/D is almost necessary.... If you are going with a Turbo, i dont thinik the shallow 1st gear will give you a problem, since it will load the turbo more...I had the same thinking as you with that tranny being used in rollbacks and such, it should take alot of power, but I'm not sure a stock tranny of any kind will take 650RWHP ...

Yes... one thing I will be fighting is a heavy car with is a shallow 2.88 rear. The LT1/4L60E swap is very popular for people with Jags like mine, and they say the deep 3.06 first gear really helps the car out from a dead stop. I am considering switching out to a 3.08 or a 3.31 to compensate for the taller first gear on the 4L80E, but don't know if I want to bring down the overdrive. I am going to get it running with the 2.88 gears first and then see how it pulls in 4th.

How heavy do you think you're car is going to be, and what gears are you using?

Well i am hoping to get it down to 3200# with me in it... Since i am going with the turbo set up i will probably use a 3.23 or 3.42...If you are using a turbo, you dont need alot of gear.
